I'm wondering if I should try to put Windows 11 on my Surface Pro 3. Obviously the device shipped with Windows 8.1 and still struggles sometimes, so it's probably a lost cause.

I went from 8.1 to 10 with little hiccups, but it's only an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM. Think it's worth a shot?

After seeing this post, I thought I'd put Windows 11 on my old Surface 3, but I've just looked and I've no idea where it is, and tbh haven't seen it since I moved house last year :(

Well I took your advice, and it's running well!

The only complaint I have so far is I can't seem to install .NET 3.5 to install the Zune software.

I've tried registry edits, enabling it through Programs an Features, and forcing it with admin command prompt, and it just won't install. Keeps showing this error code:

Any idea what I'm missing?

Edit: Never mind, I got it working randomly... I uninstalled a couple of things and restarted and it worked!

Just don't forget that MS has relaxed the requirements on the Dev build for now.

So I have one little hiccup so far on my Pro 3.

After using this method to load it onto my Pro 3, the power button doesn't work. I press it and it does nothing. This also means I can't seem to use it to wake up my PC from it's sleep, and none of the keyboard buttons work to wake it up either on the Type Cover.

I ran the Firmware Tool from this page, but still no luck.

Any ideas?

Here's what mine looks like:

1626225191238.png

This isn't as much an issue with the power settings as it is getting the power button functionality to work. For example I can't lock my screen by closing the Type Cover or tapping the power button. It's strange!

I'm still stuck with my same issues - Windows 11 on my Pro 3 doesn't seem to register my volume rocker or power key.

Does anyone have an idea of how I can fix?

Looks like these folks are all having the same problem as me, with some people getting it to work while it doesn't work for others.

I've tried this step in Device Manager but no dice:

Don't know if I'm willing to go through a PC reset or not. I don't have much on this machine, so maybe it's worth a go.

The issued has probably something to do with the touch keyboard and physical keyboard conflict. But I just can't believe Microsoft did not even look at this first before releasing the insider OS. They are probably working on a totally different Surface hardware for Windows 11.

I just found my old Surface Pro 3 i5.
I think it was running W10.
I'll see if it still works and give it a go.

Ran PC Health Check
My Surface Pro 3 does NOT meet Windows 11 system requirements.
I'm not going to force a Windows 11 installation.

Since this thread got resurrected, I've had Windows 11 on my Pro 3 for over half a year now, and it's OK. Really struggles to run it, but if I remove all of the fancy graphics it helps. haha.
