Switch to a Microsoft account

hi
This is my first thread, glad I joined this forum :)
Because of the changes that Microsoft wants to make in version 22H2 that requires registration with a Microsoft account (I know there are ways to bypass but I prefer not to do that)
I want to switch from a local account to a Microsoft account but with OneDrive sync disabled because I don't need them (I use Google Drive)
Sometimes I do not connect to the Internet and use the device without a connection, will the Microsoft account prevent me from that?
What things does Microsoft share with my device? Does it contain personal data such as photos, videos or passwords (with sync disabled and OneDrive)

1. Just uninstall onedrive
2. You can still login with Internet offline using MS account
3. This old chestnut. MS do not share personal data like videos, photos etc.

In fact, the Internet, specifically Reddit, is filled with people who promote this talk as an absolute truth, and there were some fears that it was true, as I had never used a Microsoft account

@Alex222

Reddit is one of the most useless and hopeless sources of information that I´ve ever seen on the Internet -- Just Avoid. Gartner also is pretty hopeless --usually if you do the exact oppositeto what they recommend you will come off better -- fortunately though Gartner seems to have disaapeared for the moment.

The thing about uninstalling onedrive is with every major update it will reappear again. I have found it much easier to disable it by leaving it installed, turning off 'start with windows' option and using the 'unlink this PC' function within its settings. Doing it this way, your settings are honored by any update that comes later.

It sill baffles me as to why this fear of OneDrive.

Anyway, there's absolutely no reason to "uninstall" OneDrive. If one has Windows 10/11 Pro, as the OP does, they can simply disable it via the Local Group Policy Editor as shown in Brinks tutorial below (Option One)...

Also agree with glasskutter's sentiment.

Agree
Why not just treat it as an "External" drive or Network drive -- you don't have to have it "Synching" all the time - in fact its probably more annoying when that feature IS enabled. I've no problem with sign in --if you've paid for a service then it's reasonable that you have to supply credentials to use it -- or if a free service is offered - same conditions. You can uninstall one drive if you are that bothered any way.

I usually leave any messing around with the registry as a "Last resort" not a "First go to" place for fixes. But as the Brits say "Horses for Courses".

One drive on my system (note file explorer is tabbed in this release of W11).

I want to switch from a local account to a Microsoft account.....
Welcome to Eleven Forum.

You don't actually need to switch your Windows sign-in to a Microsoft account to be able to use the extra features that require an MS account, such as the Widgets. See this tutorial for details....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Oftentimes, searches on google end up to Reddit I think it's not bad at all but a completely random place everyone says whatever they want right or wrong
For this always make sure of the competent sites such as elevenforum.com gives better results, and there must be a way to change the way Google searches to direct to the specialized sites

    Windows 11
The thing about uninstalling onedrive is with every major update it will reappear again. I have found it much easier to disable it by leaving it installed, turning off 'start with windows' option and using the 'unlink this PC' function within its settings. Doing it this way, your settings are honored by any update that comes later.
I agree with this, but sometimes Microsoft resets some settings to default after the major update. I don't know if this is still present in Windows 11

Fear not from OneDrive Fear of default sync that might sync private files the user doesn't want to sync
Welcome to Eleven Forum.

You don't actually need to switch your Windows sign-in to a Microsoft account to be able to use the extra features that require an MS account, such as the Widgets. See this tutorial for details....

Thank you I will try this
