This tutorial will show you how to switch to a local account from a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11 with instead.

You can sign in to Windows 11 with a local account or a Microsoft account. However, you can easily switch between using a local account or a Microsoft account to sign in to Windows 11.

When you switch to a local account from a Microsoft account, your account will still use the same profile folder. It will not affect the name of your account's profile folder name.

Signing in to Windows 11 with a Microsoft account lets you:
  • Download apps from the Microsoft Store.
  • Get your online content in Microsoft apps automatically.
  • Sync settings online to make PCs look and feel the same - like your browser history, account picture, and color.
Signing in to Windows 11 with a local account means:
  • You have to create a user name and account for each PC you use.
  • While not recommended, you can remove the account password if you like.
  • You'll need to sign in to the Microsoft Store with a Microsoft account to download apps from the Microsoft Store.
  • Your settings won't be synced across the PCs that you use.

Here's How:

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Your info on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Switch_to_local_account_from_Microsoft_account-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Sign in with a local account instead link on the right side. (see screenshot below)

If you see a Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically link instead, then it means you are already using a local account, but had selected to sign in to all apps with a Microsoft account to be used by other apps.

Clicking on the Stop signing in to all Microsoft apps automatically link will return you to just the local account.

4 Click/tap on Next to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Switch_to_local_account_from_Microsoft_account-3.png

5 Enter your Microsoft account credentials to verify. (see screenshot below)

Switch_to_local_account_from_Microsoft_account-4.png

6 Perform the following steps to set up a local account to switch to: (see screenshot below)
  • Enter a User name you want for your local account.
  • Enter a New password you want for your local account.
  • Type the new password again to Confirm password.
  • Type a Password hint you want.
  • Click/tap on Next when finished.

You can leave the password fields empty if you do not want a password for the local account. It is recommended to password protect your local account to help keep it more secure.

If you like, you can add security questions for your local account later to provide an extra layer of protection.

7 Click/tap on Sign out and finish when you are ready to switch to a local account. (see screenshot below)

8 When you sign in to Windows 11 next, you will now sign in to your local account setup at step 6.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

It would be better to add if this is applied only to Pro version or to Home as well. I saw that Home users have additional limitations and need to do some efforts to create a local account; so without creating it first this method may not work (sorry I cannot check this, am working with Pro a lot of years).

I also would like to note that logging into MS account when OS works with local account may unintentionally switch account back to MS; even though the warning is shown, it's easy to misunderstand and skip it.

Hello, :-)

It applies to all editions. The steps are the same no matter which edition of Windows 11 you have installed.

@Brink - Can you confirm that my post #23 in the following thread is correct please? Your tutorial makes it clear that I would have to set up a new user profile from scratch if I were to switch to a local account.
It seems that a new (Local account) user profile would be created but would all existing profiles on the computer be retained (including the current 'signed-in' profile)?

Thank you.

Hello mate, :alien:

If you were just wanting to change the name of your account's profile folder, then you could do so using the method in the tutorial below instead.

No, I do not want to do that. I was hoping to convert my existing profile from 'Signed-in' to a 'Local' account so that everything would remain the same except for being 'Local' instead of signed-in.

In that case, switching to a local account from a Microsoft account will not create a new profile folder for your account. It will still use the same one.

It will still use the same one.
But how is that? 'Step 6' above states "You will not be able to use a user name that has already been used by an existing user profile". This tells me that a new profile with a different name will be created?

Doesn't 'Account name' mean 'Profile name' then? Is it referring to creating a new Windows account?

This is more complicated than it first appears. :(
I think I will forget trying this complicated procedure. All I wanted was to keep my existing profile user name but it would be 'Local' rather than signed-in.

Thanks for your efforts to clarify anyway.

You can. The account name and profile folder name are separate names. You will still use the same profile folder with the local account you switch to.

Brink,

I was also confused by this.
I had not previously realised that I had not understood this tutorial or its TenForums equivalent.
Please may I check what I think I have learnt from your exchange with Ken:-

At Step 6 of this tutorial, the name chosen will be the new username but the user profile path will remain as was.
So,
1 The command net user will now report KensNewUserName not KensOldUserName
2 The user account will continue to use the old profile path C:\Users\KensOldUserName
and possibly?????
3 Ken will be free to change KensNewUserName to something else [even to KensOldUserName] after a reboot

Hello Denis, :alien:

Q1) Correct. The new account name will be used and reported.

Q2) Correct. The current profile folder will continue to be used when switching from MS account to local account.

Q3) Correct. You can change the account name anytime without affecting the profile folder name.

@Brink - Let me see if I understand this correctly: -
  1. Step 6 creates a new 'Local' account (Let's call it 'KenLocal') on my PC and my current profile 'Ken' will switch to using that instead of the MS Signed-in account. Nothing will change on my profile. All customisations will remain. Is this correct?
  2. I will still be able to sign-in to my MS account if needed (to access the MS Store for example) and afterwards I can sign-out again and it will automatically switch back to using the Local account on my PC 'KenLocal'. Is this correct?
If it is correct then maybe add it to the tutorial to avoid confusion for simple minds like mine. :-)

1 It looks like that, yes. Make a new system image first so you can roll back if there is a problem.
2 Yes.

Q1) A new local account will be created to switch the Microsoft account to. Nothing is lost.

Q2) You will still be able to sign in and sign out to apps with your Microsoft account, and still sign into Windows as a local account. You can remove the Microsoft account used to sign in by apps like in the second tutorial below if wanted.

A new local account will be created to switch the Microsoft account to
Now I am confused again. I want my 'Ken' profile to use the new local account, not Microsoft?

I thought I had understood what happens but I give up (again).

Over to you @Try3. Maybe you will understand but it is too much for me. :-)
