Switch User Not Available After Upgrade from Win11 Home to Pro

I'm staging several Microsoft Surface Go 3 tablets (starts on Win11 Home 22000.318) and after upgrading from Win11 Home to Pro (after ugrade version 21h2, build 22000.318), switch user is not available. I've changed the setting for Fast User in gpedit as well as in the registry with no change. The only fix seems to be to reset and reinstall Win11.

Anyone know of a way to NOT reset & reinstall Win11 to get switch user to show up?

sfc /scannow

Reboot

Sign on with the new user named test > report findings

It allows me to login as the Test account, and I can pick between Admin or Test, but I cannot enter a new user (like another 0365 account)

Any other suggestions?

Can you access the second account at all? To back up any files? If so then simplest option may be to then remove it in user accounts, and re-add it again. And see if that works.

@Hazel123 unfortunately that won't work. There will be a variety of O365 users using these tablets. I need to restore the "Other User" feature. The image below is from the latest tablet I just reset and reinstalled Win 11 Pro on (and the other user option magically comes back).

It seems strange when you only upgraded from Home to Pro. If you'd upgraded to 11 from 10 I could understand the odd thing not being as it should be, but a pro upgrade should be very simple. I can only think that it's to do with 11 Pro having different user account options. Only pro has the option for local accounts in Windows 11.

@Hazel123 I had the same issue a few weeks ago on a new Dell XPS that I upgraded from 10 Home to 10 Pro. The fix was the same, reset & reinstall. There's gotta be a stupid policy I'm missing...

@zbook That would add the user, but my issue is when employee X goes to use the device, there won't be an "Other User" choice for them to enter their O365 credentials.

'Other user' is a generic placeholder name and only ever appears when Windows is set up to sign in with an account that does not exist on this PC. One way to do that is to use Netplwiz to set up an automatic sign in at start up, but leave the account name blank.

Thanks, I’ll try the netplwiz.

However, I do the same set up steps as I do pre- & post- upgrade, and I get the ‘other user’ option after the reset/reinstall sign in.

'Other user' only appears when Windows is trying to sign in with an account that it does not recognise. I can only suggest you review how you are setting up the initial OOBE after the reset/reinstall and try to identify any possible reason for account name confusion.

Are you setting up with a Microsoft account initially? If so, try using a local account instead. You can always switch this to a Microsoft account later. Pro has an option to use an offline (local) account as the initial account. Home doesn't, but can be made to do so with a workaround.

Now that's a question perhaps you could answer Bree. If you need Windows Pro to set up a local account at install, but can't upgrade to Windows Pro till after install, how do you set up with a local account from scratch?
