System cleanup after upgrading to Win 11 22H2

Just upgraded my Dell laptop to 22H2 via the installation assistant. It went well but had an issue with an update that I was able to resolve. This system only has a 512 GB SSD with about 350 GB free.

I'm looking to clear some of the files no longer needed after the update. One file in particular, C:/$GetCurrent appears to be files downloaded to update the system. I think it would be safe do delete that file, but just want to be sure it's actually safe to delete it. The windows.old folder needs to be there in case I decide to roll it back to 21H1 within the next 19 days or so.

I'm considering just waiting the 10 days or so where the windows.old file gets automatically deleted, I'll just run disk cleanup at that time. I just want to be certain that the system is working fine before doing some of the cleanup. Disk space is not a major issue yet, but I would like to gid rid of any unnecessary junk.

You can go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations to safely delete unneeded files.

I’ve noticed Disk cleanup has been removed from right click on C drive & now to cleanup windows.old you have to open storage sense & click on temp files where you’ll see the option to cleanup that folder.

I noticed that also. You were able to right-click on the start button and it would be there, but it isn't on 22H2. Disk cleanup can still be accessed via Control Panel/Windows Tools. Using Storage Sense from settings may work also. I'll see how 22H2 works out for a few days. The windows.old folder will be automatically deleted in 10 days, but there are ways to extend the time. Worst case scenario would be to restore an image with 21H2 if one really wants to go back.

That was removed a while back, it's not there in the current 21H2 either....

If you want to find it easily in 22H2, then click Start and begin to type 'disk clean-up'. Pin it to Start if you like, as I have done.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
Strange as I used this the last time I did an in-place repair a few months ago.

Disk Cleanup is on the general tab in 21H2.
