Task bar is missing icons

I am getting a new issue where the application icon on my task bar is missing the icon. All I see is a gray square instead of the application icon. The missing icon issue doesn't appear anywhere else. Anyone have a cause for this. Stuff like SFC or DISM doesn't fix the issue.

Hello Ash,

You can see if unpinning and pinning the app again on the taskbar may refresh it to show its icon.

Thanks, I did try that as well, but it did not resolve the issue.

In that case, you can also see if rebuilding the icon cache using an option in the tutorial below may sort it.

I think I tried that but that didn't work.

I did find a solution finally.

In Task bar, right click and select Task Bar Settings.
Scroll to the section "Task Bar Behavior".
Toggle each checkbox and drop down.

Not sure which one, but one of the toggle fixed the issue.

OK, I spoke too soon, the icon disappear again and now the task bar setting doesn't fix it. Will keep looking for a solution. In the worse case, I could create a new profile but that seems extreme.

I had a similar problem a few weeks back, turned out to be the NVIDIA driver. I re installed it, did a restart and all was back to normal.

That's the other computer. That has usb issues from the windows update, which was eventually fixed

We have the same issue but we have Intel Graphics. I have found a small work around where you restart explorer.exe from task manager and it brings up the icon. But a full PC restart puts it right back to being broken. Sometimes it lasts a few reboots but generally only one. I have also tried the cache rebuild and a reg setting but it doesn't fix it

I tried restarting explorer, but it doesn't fix the issue. I think there are multiple issues, sometimes it's icon cache, somethings it's something else.
