Taskbar Settings/personalization Hidden Icon menu

I have many entries in my Hidden Icon menu under setting/personalization/Other system tray icons that are set to off and I would like to remove those entries from the list and only leave the ones that are set to on.
Is there a registry key or tweak to do that?

Welcome to the forum. No solution to remove apps from the list that I am aware of other than uninstalling the apps themselves or stopping the apps from automatically starting at boot..

Thanks, a few of those apps were portable so uninstall is not an option. Not a big deal.

You might check to see if there is an entry using autoruns that is making one of the portable apps show up as auto start. Autoruns has to be run as admin and is a standalone app. Autoruns for Windows - Sysinternals

There seems to be a bit of confusion here. This has nothing to do with autostart. This has to do with the list of icon apps in the hidden icon menu in taskbar personalization. There are app icon that are set on to show in the taskbar and app icons that are turned off. I want to clean up the list of apps that are turned off that I am no longer using.

No, no confusion. Each of the apps on that list has a tray application entry within the app which puts the app in the system tray. In searching found that these entries are listed under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

You can remove them; however, be aware that doing so not only removes the icon but also stops the application from performing any background actions. As long as it is for an app you have uninstalled, it should be safe to remove it.

I've not really looked very closely at that list before. I have programs in there that I have uninstalled. The icons and switches are still there but the switch does nothing. They didn't bother me as I didn't know they were there. Now I'd like to remove them.

More reading, more answers. It seems Windows store much of the system tray data under this registry key Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
This data is stored in some sort of binary code that is undecipherable by a normal user as to which line of code goes with which entry.. Maybe @Brink can correct me if I'm wrong. He's our resident registry expert.

That would reset the notification icons like below, but they will eventually return if the apps are still installed.

As far as old uninstalled apps still having a task tray entry, this is another good reason to use an uninstaller like Revo or Iobit rather than uninstalling through Programs and Features or Settings. Any good uninstaller removes the application using the application's uninstaller, then scans and finds all the registry keys associated with the program that is left behind. Using the Windows method leaves a ton of registry entries.

In Windows 10 - was enough to delete IconStreams & PastIconsStream and they would reset. Tried that multiple times even used a script and endless restarts latter... the icons were still there - as i left them (no change whatsoever). I'm well aware - they're meant to be re-assigned once you use an app with Tray function (even if not set or disabled/hidden) - that wasn't my concern/issue, but... "duplicates". Since i had an app cloned 5x times. After all those failed trials was sure Windows 11 is bugged. Tried above scripts just now - with no expectations, yet... it worked (did reset).

Latter Edit: Nevermind!

I figured out why it was doing that (apparently, it's working as intended - since the app in question - has 4 others affiliates besides the main function... for displaying temperature, wattage and speed - each using a different tray icon).

@Brink Given what you've done in that reset bat, do you think it's practical to adapt it to be a backup/restore instead, or is that doomed to failure due to the esoteric nature of this area? Just looking for a way to restore what's shown and what's hidden after a build upgrade, which are frequent in the Insider world.

You could also adapt it as a back up and restore for those locations.
