Yeah, but having the ones I need on the taskbar negates having to search the Start Menu
Absolutely! (y)
I just don't like things pinned to the Taskbar.

I prefer a clean Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu...

The more infrequently used programs I make available through QTTabBar's Middleclick Desktop Context Menu..., mainly because I don't want them clogging up the Start Menu if I don't use them too often, or, the program icon are too ugly!!!

Dru, to be 100% fair, I just copied your desktop wallpaper, to a .jpg file on my own computer. I love it!
But you'd find my own desktop, NOT to your liking.
WhiteHouse2.jpg

Yes, it's my wallpaper. (this week) The most recognized House in the world.
My program icons start in the lower left corner, go up to the top, across the top, and down the right side. Everything I want to do is right at my Mouse Pointer. No hunting, searching, or digging for anything. I even have a few icons in my Task Bar, which by the way, is all the way to the left.
I once heard an old sage say: "a clean desk is the sign of a sick mind".

Did someone say the word "XP" ?
Just for the fun of it, I recently installed Windows XP on to an old IDE hard drive, that I had just laying around. And I installed that HD onto an old eMachine that still has both IDE and Floppy Disk Ports.

XP is running as good as it ever did. It just won't run some of the newer AV, AS and Browser software. But hey, that's OK. I didn't expect that it would. It's all just for fun anyway, so sink or swim, it's all Good! But for the one who says that "XP is dead", not so McGee! I have proof!
Playing around with it, brought back great memories of my past life as a Computer Tech, running House Calls. Them was the good ol' days!

However, now at 80, if someone calls, I go. Just, last week, I set up two new PC's with Windows 11, for an old customer of mine.

They really hated the new look, of Windows 11, but after I installed the new "Open Shell" and did a few tweaks, they were happy again.
They really liked that old, familiar, Windows 7 look, with the START button in the lower left corner, and my Quick Shutdown shortcut right next to it.

Well, I've got a thunder storm coming in, and I'm going to loose the internet, so I'll close, and wish you all a very Great Day,
TM

I nearly cried when Win XP went EOL. VISTA was insult to injury until they finally got their service pack stuff sorted out. (SP1, SP2, SP2.5..) At least it paved the way for the most awesome Windows OS ever. Sadly, those days are gone. Win 11 did manage to glow a little but it never managed to shine like Win 7 Ultimate did. All these were vast improvements over Win ME, my very first Windows OS licensed in my name. Ugh!

I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
Ah yes, the Infamous ME!
It had one disastrous failing, where it would fill a small HD with backup files, till there was no space left.
I had so many customer complaints about that, I wrote a batch file to remove those files, and I put that on a self booting floppy disk. In one case, it took the DOS batch file three days to delete all those offending files off of a customer's HD. I handed out dozens of those disks to my customers. They loved being able to clean up their own HD's without having to call me.
MS fixed that problem in the next version of Windows.l

    This is my backup system.
I actually have "friends" who don't want anything on their desktop. Not icons, and certainly NOT pictures. As The Robot was famous for saying, "That does not Compute!" Like a physical desk, in a physical office, there are certain things that just NEED to be there.
I'm reminded what an old sage once said, "a clean desk is the sign of a sick mind".
Then there is the extreme opposite, where the entire desktop is covered with little icons. What a mess. (some people just don't know how to create folders, and put things away)
I go with a border of icons, but nothing in the middle. Just some nice picture that I scavenge from one place or another.

Or, worse yet...we know how to do it, but we just willfully choose not to. I usually have a bunch of apps opened up and cannot see my desktop anyway...so I really don't' care what's on it.

Then there is the extreme opposite, where the entire desktop is covered with little icons. What a mess. (some people just don't know how to create folders, and put things away)
I have many icons and folders on my desktop, but you can’t see them. Stardock Fences is something I can very much appreciate. A very cool program.

Meh. I treat a desk top like a desk top. I leave the working icons for the OS (the ones I'm always using) on the desktop, put the ugly short cuts with the arrows on the task bar (no more ugly arrows) and leave the folders I'm working with on the desk top. Once a month I clean up my desktop. It's really that simple. No muss. No fuss. Of course, Win 11 gives you the option of putting a clean fresh desktop over top your desktop. Haven't figured out a use for that yet.

I’ve been trying to get around to checking that out. Stardock Fences4 has had this ability for a while, but I never used it. You can simply double click your desktop with Fences4 and everything vanishes, until you dbl click again.
But I love the Pop-out Fences, those bars on the desktop, that hold icons in a manageable way (for me)

In the real world, where we work at a real wooden desk, A completely Clean Desk is a real disadvantage.
You hear the phone ringing, now where did you hide it?
Then you have several pieces of paper that need to be stapled together, but now, where did I put that dang stapler?
The day just goes downhill from there. Tape dispenser? Paper Clips? Inbox/Outbox? Calendar?

I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind, because....
fix.jpg :lmao: :lmao:

Years ago, when MS first released Windows, as I remember it, there were several things on the desktop, of a fresh install.
And they were always in the same location and order starting in the upper left corner, with "My Computer"
Just under that was the "Recycle Bin". Etc, Etc, Etc, , , Yada yada yada!

Over the years, I've developed my own working desktop and it just never varies. I've set it up the same way for hundreds of my customers, and they find it user friendly and very Workable.
4thDesktop.jpg
I do like to change up my desktop wallpaper. This is from last week. The most well known house in the world!
The multi-colored icon, center left, is a shortcut to my "Cleanup.bat" program.
All my data files, accessed via the folder shortcuts across the top of the window, are not on my C: drive.
My browsers and other internet related programs are always on the Right side of the window.
This doesn't show my TaskBar, which also has a few important Icons, starting with my Quick Shutdown Icon.

BS! The only "disadvantage" is in your mind.

My workplace desktop is just as clean as my home PC. AND my last 8 years in the military I was a budget analyst working directly for my Commander - he (or anyone else) certainly never had an issue with my "clean desktop" ;-)

Perhaps the environment you worked in required cluttered desktops to make the boss feel good

My real desk is an absolute disaster! :lmao:
It sees more action than a door crasher sale on Black Friday at Wally's World. (Wally's is probably cleaner and more organized too.)
It's another one of those once a month deals. Every month I get to disasterfy it all over again. This beat goes on! 😎

A desk with Nothing on it, means the owner of that desk is not ready to go to work. Taking a day off? On vacation? Or, just plain lazy?

My own desks, both physical and PC, have all my tools on them, so I can go right to work at a moments notice. No Pic's!

And, it's not even a Windows 11 thing. It's been like that all the way back to DOS 2.0.

Cheers Mates!
