Solved Thoughts on Buying Malwarebytes.

After reading a few posts about Malwarebytes I decided to give it a try. It seems to run OK side by side with Eset Internet Security. I still have a few days left on the trial version. My question is should I buy Malwarebytes or just use the free version. If I go with the paid version, I'll go with the Family pack.

My thoughts on Malwarebytes is that in its early days, it was very effective at detecting and removing malware on less secure earlier Windows operating systems. But from Windows 10 onwards, I find it pretty much pointless and more of a hindrance than anything else. To me, it's now just riding on its early reputation.

I have been using Premium for a long time because if you want real-time protection you need Premium.
It is installed on my 3 laptops and two Android phones.
Malwarebytes support is excellent!

I downloaded the free version recently and thought I must be on a fake site at first. Once you click to choose download a load of confetti type stuff appears on the screen like congratulations - which is just the kind of thing you get on fake sites telling you you've just won something. But it was actually the malwarebytes site. I didn't like that at all when just going to download a program!

After reading a few posts about Malwarebytes I decided to give it a try. It seems to run OK side by side with Eset Internet Security. I still have a few days left on the trial version. My question is should I buy Malwarebytes or just use the free version. If I go with the paid version, I'll go with the Family pack.
I decided to let go of my 3 years BitDefender Total Security licence after using it for a year. I was using the same for 3 years prior to that, Norton 360 for 3 years prior to using BitDefender, Kaspersky before Norton, etc. And throughout that period, the free version of Malwarebytes as a on-demand scanner to 'complement' the real-time security solution.

Over such a long period, I had these security solutions pick up a few here and there, but more importantly much of what they picked up were actually living in the hard drive for a long time. Don't know why they were not picked up earlier because I would routinely run a full scan of my system.

I realised that for my usage, I need none of these because they were an unnecessary strain on the system resources. I have been using Windows Defender and Windows Firewall (default setting to BLOCK all incoming AND outgoing connections) and as before, have no issues at all. All my browsers are configured with maximum security under their Settings.

In addition to saving money, my system hardware is happier than ever before because there is no unnecessary load to deal with. Everything runs fast, and everything runs cooler than ever before.

Bottom-line: if you are careful about how you use your computer, you don't need these 3rd party security solutions.

I do have the free version of mwb and try it now and again but it has never come up with anything not already picked up by Defender.

I know many slate Defender but in most cases it just seems to be based on years old information.

I've been using the paid version of MalwareBytes for about 3 years. So far, it's worked great, mostly detecting PUPs (Potentionally Unwanted Programs), but occasionaly It finds something malicious in real time which I'm thankful for. I use it with no problems with MS Defender (which incidently finds some things MalwwareBytes misses.) For situations like that I go to VirusTotal to see why.

That was the good news.

The bad news is that MalwareBytes has a huge memory footprint and does require some non-trivial CPU resources to run. Large memory footprints are not uncommon in antivirus software and although I'm not that conversant in how they operate under the hood, all of them seem to use lots of systems resources. If you have a modern capable system, the drain on system resources doesn't seem to affect anything so I can't complain too much on that score.

The really bad news is how much "telemetry" the package sends home. I have pfSense running pfBlocker and you would be astounded how much MalwareBytes "phones home". I block all the telemetry which doesn't seem to affect the operational performance, and I haven't done any analysis of exactly what its sending to their servers from the user's system, but non-transparency makes me nervous. As long as it doesn't affect anything and the software doesn't complain I will continue to block their telemetry. Having said that, any malware detections from users should be sent back to the servers for analysis so it can be mitigated. I have no problems with that, but almost all of the antivirus software packages I've seem don't differentiate what user's "data" is shared with the company. I have no reason to suspect MalwareBytes is doing anything underhanded but a little more transparency would go a long way to helping customers make informed decisions.

If you are going to buy AV, try something else first, anything else, but MalwareBytes. This sums it up.

If you use defender, the free version of Malwarebytes for a on demand scan should be fine

The following policy is for all Malwarebytes products and services. Malwarebytes Privacy Policy

Over the years, I've used Norton/Symantec, McAfee, Malwarebytes, AVG, Avast and a few others, but finally settled on Windows Defender exclusively since the advent of Windows 10. And, at the risk of inviting the fates to turn on me, I'm happy to report that I've not had a problem on any of my computers.
Seems to me if you keep Windows and your software fully updated, there's no need for additional protection - especially paid protection.

I am an employee and I'm not saying you have to buy our product, but you can go visit the Bleepingcomputer forums and see how many people have been infected with ransomware that was only running Windows Defender. Granted, where you visit, what you click, etc. does have a lot to do with it but in some cases, as with unpublished exploits, one can also be attacked having not clicked on something bad. Having good backups of your data that you take offline or otherwise make unavailable to attack is a very prudent process that I would highly recommend if you're going to rely on just WD. You could go years without any infection but it only takes one successful time to encrypt all your data. Do yourself a favor and make good backups a part of your maintenance.
