Thoughts on Windows 11

Again.. I'm weird and I like 11.. but then I had to get used to using various OS's during my working days. From various PC OS's to different mainframe OS's.. IE.. JCL etc. What I do is adapt.. to me.. complaining never helps.
If we don't complain, MS will never know it's broken and never consider a fix. Even if we are ignored, hopefully the input from many people will help MS in there deliberations for the next update or iteration.

On the suggestion of "modularity", be careful of what you wish for cause you just may get it

Yeah, it's a great idea until Microsoft starts charging as "add-ins" for Windows. Next thing you know people are screaming bloody murder cause Microsoft gave you what you wanted.... for a price :lmao:

Oooo.... Now that IS a scary thought! Almost like Office 365 where you "Rent" the software, and pay, and pay ,and pay... (I own my copy.)

Office is a little different; and yeah, I'm paying the subscription :)

BTW, what you paid for (think you "own") is a license to use said software. The only difference between you and me, is mine renews every year so I'll always have the latest versions, where yours is a one-time pay for a single version.

That said as a Microsoft Office user since 1998, it's a suite I relish and thus have no issues paying the subscription. YMMV

I agree.

Hence a post about the modular suggestion by Ghot. Why not let the people decide what works for them and what doesn't on install. Create a very modular OS/UI, and let people keep the install Disc/ISO/Link to add or subtract modules as needed. Unless there is a major dearth of users for a feature, leave it alone. Also, why force people to accept the space an APP or Program that they will never use takes up. There should be no such thing as an un-installable App or program. Supply a suggested install package, and let people subtract from that, then choose from a list of optional features. This would include opting to put back in features or UI options that were removed during the latest tweak. As a people who use an option, tweak or utility dwindle down to a very few, just let it "fall off" the back of the list of options during the next update or iteration.

Of course with the state of the current Operating systems, the economy, technology and programming today, I can also see why this would be untenable. But it's nice to dream.
See my post in another thread, where I already pointed out that they could have just added the ability to enable/disable (or show/hide) a flexible list of optional/advanced features to let the user decide.

I've just seen a similar switch for what looks like straight financial gain by the ON1 company, for it's photo editing software

ON1 Photo Raw 2021 was a single program with a number of different "modular" options to perform different tasks, if you wished you could use the whole application as a plug in for Lightroom and a few other editors Photoshop, Affinity ... ... when On1 Photo raw 2022 was released a short time ago you could purchase either the complete package which was no longer usable as a plugin or a set of five plugins, ( the original modules) that could be used with the same editors as previously.

The problem was that some users want to use the application as a standalone and also as a plugin, which was always possible before, also a few new features were added to the main application such as AI sky replacement that was not in any of the plugins, so pushed users into purchasing both options.

the issue was that this virtually doubles the cost for the same, albeit improved functions ad a few new ones - there is a long running "discussion" on their own internal Forum, that has a few blanked out words ...

It's not just Microsoft

I had a stupidly discounted price offered so I took up their offer and the software is quite impressive, a lot more so than their sales policy

There's complaining and then there's wining about something. MS has made up it's mind on 11 already and the only way to comment on it it via the feedback mechanism. Complaining about it here is not going to get MS to do about a thing

Yeah, that's a future I see coming to Windows - pay for add-in modularity.

I'm not saying it's around the corner, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it arrived. As I said, be careful of what you wish for

I already did face facts, that's what I always do, and, I do it for a living. As for my own personal use, I have installed ExplorerPatcher, Open-Shell, Battery Mode and TranslucentTB, and I also have applied a fairly big number of tweaks the vast majority of which are just registry settings. I have said this before, this isn't about me. Rather, it is about others, who feel like they were left behind only because they refuse to install 3rd party stuff like this and also because they don't want to apply a whole plethora of tweaks that would make things too complicated for them and/or are too tedious to them, or else they fear that these solutions might stop working eventually and/or might break stuff. These are all valid concerns about shortcomings. (Even, if these shortcomings have no direct impact on me in any way, shape or form.) I can still acknowledge that that's what they factually are, and, I do. Maybe you can't or won't do the same, and that's all fine by me. But I am a trained software developer. I do this for a living. If I decided to remove useful features like Microsoft has done, that would be among absolute fastest ways for me to get fired. Speaking of facts, I can't fire Microsoft. But you can rest assured that very large corporations who use the type of technologies that I use in my IT role rely on these same technologies only because they can afford to not buy from Microsoft in just about each and every situation where choosing to not buy from Microsoft is feasible to these very large corporations. Had Microsoft decided to show a little bit more respect to home users of Windows, I am confident it would've gained Microsoft some of its lost credibility back. It is one of those reasons why two decades ago I did not go for .NET (and I also have a nickname for it: .NOT 😆).

I don't care either way.. now I'm going let this go.. you should conciser doing the same.

YMMV
Yup.
A license for a single version. Like I said before. Each person has different needs. Me, I don't want or need the latest version. I get updates, and patches to make my version compatible with the "Latest Version". Version changes have not always been good to me. Because of my job I always had to be very familiar with the latest versions of Windows and Office. That doesn't mean I had to like them though. I have always felt that the subscription fees are a little like repurchasing a license for the license I have already paid for.
Updates have been traditionally supported by those that purchase a license after me, so I sleep very well at night accepting these updates. Office is not cheap, and this is a situation where business and corporate licenses help support the little guy.

I wasn't talking about replacing the whole sky. It's just a bar for crying out loud. You know... with icons. And a few menus and that sort of thing. Like, just one step above rocket science. Not two steps I mean... only a single one.
the issue was that this virtually doubles the cost for the same, albeit improved functions ad a few new ones - there is a long running "discussion" on their own internal Forum, that has a few blanked out words ...

It's not just Microsoft
Of course it's not just Microsoft. That's just because Microsoft is an unremarkable company that is so terribly poor in fact, it does not have the capacity to stand out from the rest. 😀

How a subscription "works" for you depends on your needs Now I am a long term Adobe Lightroom user, with occasional forays into the world of Photoshop.

Photoshop and Lightroom were on a Three year update cycle with lightroom costing a couple of hundred pounds and the full photoshop with all the " Bells and Whistles " was over £700 so lets say £900 every three years to always have the latest version

Then they brought out subscription, and everyone was horrified at "Renting software"

Then you have to do the Math(s) I have a subscription to the photography package which includes Lightroom and Photoshop, (and a lot more), and costs me £10 a month or £360 for the old three year cycle For this I get both applications and always have the latest version. Now the update cycle is anual for major updates and continuous for small changes and minor updates

All this for the price of a Burger meal at the drive through once a month

Now if you are someone who does not want or need to be completely up to date Photoshop CS6 still works and of course there are a lot of alternatives available at one off prices lower than Photoshop was, some even lower than the ongoing cost of the Photography package, Some good ones can be found for free but I still believe that adobe still lead their field and so continue with the subscription, I also use a number of other packages from adobe's competitors as they may do certain tasks quicker/better/easier than photoshop - All my images are initially processed and managed in lightroom as always

Is there a difference between O365 and O2019 updates? - I seem to be fully updated.

I always thought that the O365 was a Branding related to purchase method rather than a different product per se

Office 2019 and 2016 before it were versions of the software purchased under the umbrella of O365, you could still purchase the same software via other channels most notably the Business channel - same software, different payments and delivery method

Yep Nige, that was my impression as well, I was just wondering if O365 got preference regarding updates - I have O365 on my corporate PC - will check versions on Monday.

Btw notice they misspelled "Colourful" .. LOL
