Solved Trojan found on new PC

Hi folks

Some of these "security experts" really haven't a clue when dealing with "Non Corporate or Home" computers. I view them with the same distain that I have for some of those "Financial advisors" who never pony up any of their own money .

My late dad who knew nothing about the shenanigans of the US/UK etc stock markets always use to quip "Then where are all the Investors Yachts then " while looking at the piles of expensive cars these people seem to drive around in packs. !!

Just today a friend of mine said that "her Financial advisor - had just posted that her account was now valued at 3 million EUR !! when really it was around 3,000 EUR. So as a joke she said --OK I'll cash it in --- within 35 mins the Police were around "investigating Money Laundering and possible Fraud" -- of course she was released within minutes so whatever advice you get from external services "ALWAYS CHECK AND VERIFY". Whatever the business etc.

Whether it's Linux or Windows on a home computer just use A REMOTE SYSTEM to run a cleansing process -- and if you are worried that the HDD / SSD has been compromised beyond normal recovery - then just "Low level format it" via writing random hex digits (or even x'00' to every sector on the drive --INCLUDING THE CACHE (often forgotten).

There's so much snake oil in this business --often I think that some of those "Big beefy men" standing outside various buildings in Amsterdam's notorious Red Light District have more value than some of the advice given by these "so called security experts". (Note -- Corporates and other national / international infrastructure is a totally different ballgame --my remarks are construed principally to people managing HOME type computers).

Cheers
jimbo
Cheers jimbo, are you referring to Bleeping Computer as these security experts? I'll tell ya, they're more of a security expert than myself! :-)

Hi there
No specific people - but just "Of the General Class" of this lot.

Remember all the doom and gloom predictions coming out of Gartners about computers. This group was much loved by corporates but in reality if you did the EXACT OPPOSITE to what they said you'd be the winner by a staggering 87%.

Cheers
jimbo

Since it's a Laptop or OEM System but a Custom PC - where exactly did you get your copy of Windows?! 🤔

Saying "it's a new PC" - only makes sense if it's a OEM build. Official Windows copies do not come with any Viruses/Trojans, well... except for Microsoft Spyware - but every anti-virus/spyware tool turns a blind eye to that. Thus, either you got some pirated copy with embed Trojans - or you downloaded some infected app. 🤨

I disagree with a lot of you who have never done any cleaning other than to spend the time to wipe your hard drive & some Trojans will stay ! Go ask any Malware Removal Specialist if you do not believe me ! Sometimes we have had to run 3 or 4 different programs to find & remove them ! As you said WAI "they just don't go away" !
Most will be removed with a wipe but not all !

If there's a definition for the Trojan in question or can be spotted through heuristics - that's the end of story. 99.99% of all Trojans have a very basic functionality. Point being - they're not some state of the art A.I. based trojans - that can evolve and adapt - playing cat and mouse with the OS's protective features.

Furthermore, there's no such thing as a Malware Removal Specialist. That's the most basic requirement for anyone working in an IT service. Not to mention - it's also common to use mainstream tools to clean an OS. It's not like a data recovery specialist - where you dedicated apps which are way way to expensive - for mainstream users. Including hardware tools - and the skill for changing for moving a HDD platter (less relevant this days - but HDDs are not dead yet - so that's still a requirement).

The subject of this topic is "Trojan found on new PC "!

Again, that would only make sense if it's an OEM build (for example: if a new PC from DELL came with a Trojan). Seeing the name of this topic - that's what made me curious (if some OEM packed a Trojan in their new system) - only to realize it's a redundant detail, possibly even a pirated windows with imbued Trojans or some infected app he downloaded. So hey, i find it quite ironic - that you consider my comment odd - when you named your topic like that... As the saying goes... "Pot, meet kettle!"

Old or New that's irrelevant. My point is - when you ask for help be transparent about the issue and on point. What exactly is the point of that detail if it's not an OEM?! Seriously, saying it's a NEW Pc - only makes sense if it's a hardware issue. Not strictly software, like Trojans.

On the other hand - if it's a Custom PC with pirated Windows - then he needs a new/legit Windows from a legit source. Even if that specific Trojan was removed - there's still room for other back-door apps - which are currently not tagged by the AV companies. It's usually just a matter of time (till they release a definition for those) - but in the meantime -the OS is still compromised (especially if using some credit card on that system).

A simple wipe and reinstallation are in most cases the only solution necessary.

I only recommended using Linux as it will allow you to reformat the drive into a non-Windows friendly system, as an extra step of caution.

There is no need to actually install Linux, as all that you're doing is using the Live interface to format your drive into a non-Windows friendly format, thus making it virtually impossible for any left behind malware to live again as only a few viruses and malware applications are cross platform. Again all you are doing is only formatting the drive, there is no need to install it.

Again most of the time there is no need to rewrite the BIOS, as only an extremely few actually infect it. I only mentioned it in to be thorough.

That's good news they found the trojan was no longer there. Sounds like Defender did it's job properly then :-) Did you scan all the drives with Eset including the data drives? Just to make sure they're all clean!

Are you still going to do a clean install? I noticed on another thread you said your computer came set up with the name "Owner" - which means someone set it up rather than resetting it to the out of box experience you would get if reset to factory settings (then you go through the whole set up process and choose your own login name).

If the computer is virus free then you could probably just do a full reset within windows and no need to wipe the drive or clean install from scratch. That way you'd still have all the correct drivers and the recovery partition in tact.

Settings - System - Recovery - Reset this PC

After backing up of course. That way it is new to you properly.

Yeah, it looks like it did. Also remember I did that step where I deleted the folder in protection history that I mentioned a good few posts back. If I didn't do this, I think Windows Security would have kept flagging it as being there.

Yes, I am doing the clean install, probably won't be till the weekend though as I need my PC for work. Yeah, that is one of the reasons I am annoyed with the setup to be honest haha, the 'Owner' profile. But to be honest, I have installed/uninstalled a few programs and I want to tidy it up a bit so the clean install will do just that. I think it is a bit of OCD in me also that I just want to start again :-) Who knows, maybe the person who build it just has an image that he just uses for every PC he builds and that is why it says 'Owner', I am not too sure.

I appreciate what you mean about not being as much hassle by doing the reset within Windows, but I have it in my mind I just want to do it all from scratch. The drivers yes - hopefully getting them will be straightforward enough. With 'hopefully' being the key word there:LOL:

I have some questions about the format of the OS ssd and also the second ssd which I will probably post over in my other thread when I get around to it.

There's a piece on here about how to back up all the installed drivers first, before doing a clean install - in case there's the odd one you have trouble getting installed afterwards. See if I can find it.
