After setting it up with GPT, as advised above, I found it eventually appeared in the boot menu when starting up using F12. From that point onwards things went really badly, but before coming on to that, I should point out my BIOS has no option for enabling or disabling CSM.
Ok, so the Linux OS I am attempting to run is called
TAILS. Once it had started its automated setup process, the screen began flickering and a message claiming a hard drive failure was imminent appeared at the top of the screen. I ignored that message because I know which HDD it is and it has no relevance to the functioning of TAILS. Anyway, I configured the basics and then entered my pass phrase for persistent storage but after saving that, it said it was creating a partition for persistent storage. This step never completed. It just kept turning and turning and turning. Whilst waiting, I loaded the WiFi tab and entered my password. This was accepted immediately and the WiFi icon appeared to show I was successfully connected. Still waiting for the pass phrase registration to complete, the screen suddenly went black and stayed that way forcing me to perform a hard shutdown. I should point out that I had already encountered this on 2 previous attempts to setup TAILS.
