You currently will still experience an error if you try and update to W11 from W10 when W10 is on a vhdx file. There's no problem in updating / installing new builds on vhdx files (that used to be a restriction) but going from W10 to W11 that way isn't possible.
Just install to a temporary "physical disk" to do the update and then clone to the vhdx file and update the boot loader (bcdboot).
Simplest way is probably to update in a VM and then clone to vhdx file.
Clean installs work but if you simply want to update your system from W10>> W11 then the above applies.
