This just started popping up nagging me. I downloaded USBDeview and I see the device that is purple in color. It has a Serial, but I do not know how to find it or which one it is so I can fix whatever driver Windows managed to screw up. This machine has been working fine and now all of a sudden...

One suggestion is to unplug all USB devices except mouse and keyboard, shutdown then remove all power then restart, add them back in one at a time and check. If they are storage drive try to plug back into the same port or the drive letter may change in File Explorer and Disk Management.

That was the first thing I did. Even with ALL usa devices unplugged, the message still pops up. LOL.

USBDeview shows a purple dot on "USB ATTACHED SCSI (UAS) MASS STORAGE DEVICE

With no USB plugged in, I still get the notification so It confused me.

EDIT: I did not do exactly what you said. I did not shut down. Let me give that a go.

Could it be a false message from USBDeview? Maybe Uninstall, reboot and get/install a fresh copy?

Does it happen for all the USB devices plugged in or only a specific USB device?

Have you plugged in the problem device into another PC and checked?

I can't determine what the problem device it is. I get the error when no USB are plugged in at all.

I restarted with everything unplugged except keyboard. Message persists. So far the fix is to turn off notifications for Explorer. LOL.

Ok, I am now shooting in the dark - all around.

Download v1.6.4 of the " drivecleanup.zip - remove nonpresent drives from the registry" from Drive Tools for Windows. Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip it to a folder, say drivecleanup.

You will have two folders Win32 and x64 each containing DriveCleanup.exe for 32 bit and 64 bit respectively.

Remove all USB storage devices/Hubs/docks from your system (except your Keyboard and mouse) and reboot.

Right click on the DriveCleanup.exe and run as administrator. (Use the *.exe file appropriate for your bit version of Windows.)

After the clean up act, reboot.

Now check whether you get that notification for a non-existent drive.

( When you plug in your USB devices after this cleanup these will be installed afresh. What you have done is to remove all non-present devices, drive letters and registry entries associated with them and start with a clean slate. Hopefully that should resolve the problem.)

Yep. After the cleanup act, I immediately get the notification for USB Device not recognized. 1 USB Device not removed, 1 USB hub not removed...these are both likely related to the keyboard. I even uninstalled my keyboard and just used my mouse. No luck.

Guess I just have to live with it and turn off the notifications.

I have ONE device that says DEVICE DESCRIPTOR FAILED. I have Port #0004 Hb #0002, but I don't know what that is or where it is and I don't know how to kill or disable that. Maybe the mobo has a failure.

Did you rightclick on the DriveCleanup.exe and "Run as administrator" ? ( If you do not do that, it will ask you whether you want to run it in test mode. If you press y , it will run and show what have not been removed. Those will be removed only when you run it as administrator.)

24-09-2023 07-16-59.jpg

Run in Test Mode ( without admin privilege)

Yes. That's what I did. I've done all of this multiple times. No luck. Even with notifications turned off, i still get the sound like when you unplug and plug in a USB. Over and over and over and over again...repeatedly. I think it's related to my external drive. But there are no drivers for it, it's just a Seagate.

One thing with Macrium Reflect, it will cause that type sound when it can't run a backup so maybe some other program is doing the same.

You could try USB Device Tree viewer to see if that helps to find the fault. It's an exe (no install) and better run as admin. Old but still working.

The small letter labels near the USB icons mean;

H supports 1.1 and 2.0

F supports 2.0.1

S supports USB 3

Worth having a look.

Man, I just don't know. It sort of stops and then starts again. I thought I fixed it last night but then it started again. Perhaps the drive is failing. I don't know. I better get the data off of it just in case.

As you can see. Nothing is plugged in. So, I don't know what this even means.

Also, I filled in all of my PC info.

Don't know if it's the same but I have a Win10 with an Add-in PCIe card providing 4 USB 3 ports and get that message, usually a reboot clears it but sometimes a power-off and pull the power cord is needed. It's a spare computer I've rehabbed after my 6-year-old Win8/upgraded to Win10 started falling apart [plastic parts started breaking like the power switch in the case front].

It shows as USB 2. Might be worth opening the case and check your USB headers connections on the motherboard.

Ill check it but is it posible this is a hardware failure on my ASROCK motherboard?

Is there a way to simply disable that one port to make this go away?

In Device Management [right-click of Start] go to the Universal Serial Bus controllers section, expand it, find which port, right-click and Disable. May take some experimenting to get the one desired. SuperSpeed is USB 3, the blue-centered ports. USB 2 is the black-centered ports. On many Notebooks and maybe other devices the trident symbol used for USB will have an added SS for USB 3.
