USB hard drive not working

Hi guys this Is a bit of a long shot, but somebody might be able to help.

I have a USB external hard drive and for some reason it has stopped working when I plug it in I can hear a bleep so its connected, but it does not show up anywhere I looked in disk management and Device Manager it’s not there is there any way I can get windows to recognise it please

In disk management, is there a drive letter assigned to it?
If not, assign one
If yes, change the drive letter and see what happens.

Or is there no indication of it at all?

Try Minitool Partition Wizard Free and see if it’s visible in there.

Do you know anyone with a computer you can take it to and see if it works in theirs?
Can you tell us what the hard drive is? Is it a basic hard drive in an external casing or a branded external like a Samsung/Seagate/WD etc?

Go to device manager, go to View and select show hidden devices, are there any devices marked with an Exclamation Mark?

I would first try another USB port. New fast drives should work on either USB 3.0 ports (blue plastic inside) or older USB 2.0 ports (gray plastic inside). Older USB 2.0 devices might not be detected properly in USB 3.0 or faster ports, try a USB 2.0 port. Also rear USB ports tend to work better than front USB ports.

If it is not detected at all (nothing in Device Manager, nothing in Disk Manager), you cannot access it in order to recover your data. If it is detected at the correct capacity but the partition is damaged, you can use a recovery utility and try to save your data. If it is detected as 0 capacity, then you cannot recover your data. Unfortunately, I can relate. Specialized data recovery companies ask for $$$ and they will attempt to recover the whole disk, not specific data. It's not worth it for non crucial data.

    Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, no SSE4.2, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.

Hi Guys thanks for the advice the drive is a Usb 3 4T Seagate expansion +

I have posted two screen shots one from the Device Manager and one from the hidden devices and i dont know if its there or not

If you unplug the other external drives (I see some in Device Manager) does the Seagate show?

Up to you if you want to try it, but personally I would remove the Seagate and then delete the Seagate entries in Device Manager. Reboot, plug the Seagate back in.

I see Seagate Expansion SCSI device? Is that related to your USB disk? Unlike WD that has the SATA-to-USB converter soldered on the mainboard, Seagate should be a standard SATA 3.5" disk in a SATA-to-USB enclosure. If you don't care about Warranty, you can break it open, remove the disk and put it either inside the computer or in another SATA 3.5" to USB enclosure to read your data. I have done it many times. Depending on how important these data are, I would rather void the Warranty and access them than return to the shop because they will replace it with a blank disk and lose all data!

Hi i have removed all the Seagate entry's in the hidden drives rebooted and the Seagate entry is back but greyed out. when i plug it in the computer says (the last device plugged in is not recognised)
I think i will just bin it it only had backup images on important but i have another Usb with the same backup files on and they are fine

I have tried it on another computer and it just the same

If nothing important, but you are still covered under Warranty, you can return to the shop for a replacement. If the Warranty has expired, I would just break it open, remove the disk from the case and try connecting directly inside my PC to check it. There is a great chance the disk is OK and only the enclosure is damaged. You have nothing to lose.

Have had 4 of those Seagate 2 Tb drives. All four failed. SPAPAKONS suggestion worked for me on 2 of the drives when they failed. Two did not. I also had 3 of the Seagate 2 Tb drives but they have not failed.. Could be worth your time to try his suggestion.

With the price of USB hard drives, there's only so much effort I am willing to put into saving them before they hit the round file. FWIW, If you're at all concerned with data that might be on the drive, take it to your drill press and make Swiss cheese, that will insure that the data is truly not readable.

Before discarding, remove the disk from the case and see if it is detected when connected directly via SATA inside the PC. I hope it's SATA, not SCSI.

More often than not the SATA to USB bridge inside the enclosure fails.. The HDD itself may be OK. Is your Seagete model no STKM4000400 ? Whatever model no. search google on how to rip it open and take the HDD out. Put it into a branded enclosure ( you have to buy one) and and plug it into your computer. If your HDD is OK, it should show and you should be able to access it.

Well, if you want to buy an external disk. it is always better to buy a branded enclosure, an internal HDD/SSD of your choice and rig your own external disk. That is what I do.( I have a Cablet 2.5" SATA to USB 3.0 HDD/SSD Portable enclosure for 7mm and 9.5mm Max 6TB into which I have put a Crucial MX500 1TB SATA 2.5" 7mm Internal SSD. That was the last purchase I made.)
