I am an Amateur radio operator, and My PC is a nifty little GMKTec NUCbox K11 with a Ryzen 9 and Windows 11 Pro. I have an ICOM IC-7300 that only has a USB 2.0 I/O. I need an ethernet connection to my Ethernet router and then to my EERO Router If I can get a proper conversion to an Ethernet signal, I will be able to remotely operate the radio from my iPad and iPhone. With software, they run. Is the conversion to an Ethernet signal all there, or is it missing something that will prevent remote rig operation? Nobody on the Amateur radio side seems to know. The converters are cheap enough.

I keep such a USB to Ethernet adapter in my tool kit for 'just in case' use. With Windows and Linux I just have to plug it into a USB port. The 14" Notebook I'm on now doesn't have an Ethernet port but I have a USB-C to Ethernet adapter [about 6" long] that gives me the RJ-45 Gigabit Ethernet support. I haven't looked for an adapter for Mac devices yet.

The Mac is not a problem it has the latest Ethernet built in. I’ll get an adapter and see what happens.

Just be careful, some Macs have a USB type port that looks like a USB-C but is smaller. Might need an adapter with a USB-A plug instead.

A USB Ethernet adapter provides all the same network capabilities as a built-in Ethernet adapter or an Ethernet adapter on a PCIe card. The only difference is the interface and that possibly you may not be able to use Wake On LAN with that adapter.

I use USB to Ethernet adapters frequently and never have any difficulties whatsoever.

Suggestion: The 2.5Gbps USB Ethernet adapters have become pretty cheap lately. My suggestion would be to pick up on of those even if you are currently just using Gigabit speeds because you will be one step ahead of the game if you ever decide to switch to 2.5Gbps Ethernet.

It’s been proven to me that a USB to Ethernet adapter can slightly diminish speeds. Get a good brand.

I should add for context. I was having trouble with low speeds with a new Lenovo Laptop and ran some tests with the ISP

The newer Laptop (LENOVO Yoga 7i EVO OLED) was using a USB Adapter. I had an older laptop with an Ethernet Network port (Forgive me I can’t remember what it was). The difference was 200Mbps in favour of the older laptop.

But yes, there could of been other factors but we couldn’t work out what.

You can get HDMI to Ethernet Adaptors if you have a spare port.

That is Thunderbolt 2. Mac no longer uses it in favor of the Thunderbolt 3-4, and now Thunderbolt 5, and is compatible with all of the flavors of USB C. Even if your PC does not have USB-4, it is useful to use the USB-4/Thunderbolt cable because of its built-in hardware firewall. The GMKTech NucBox has a port for an OCuLink connection used for an external GPU.

What is a good brand for this adapter?

There is a detail I spaced about the 7300 its output is the old USB-B plug, "printer plug" will this make any difference.

Only if a suitable cable/adapter can't be found.

Not a problem. I already have USB-C to B cables. My favorite brand for this sort of thing, Anker, has a 2.5 GB USB-C to Ethernet adapter.

What you are looking for is something like a USB extender over Ethernet, not a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
