Also, if you already have a version of Nero Suite installed, you can use Nero Video (formerly Nero Vision). Other paid application I have tried is Pinnacle Studio.

The microsoft photos app can trim video quite easily and quick, you cannot make crazy edits or anything but for simple stuff it does the job just fine.

....but I don't use it for editing, just for getting the exact time for the start and end frames (in seconds). I use the command line FFmpeg utility for all my editing, for example, to trim a video starting at 10.3 seconds to 456.7 seconds it's:
FFMPEG -i input.mp4 -ss 10.3 -to 456.7 output.mp4

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I didn't mentioned command line tools like FFMPEG because are VERY difficult to use for novices. Even me that I have a certain experience I use GUI fronts, I don't type commands directly. Here to say that is you want accurate bitrate control so that a video fit in a specific disc or other size, avoid hardware acceleration like NVEnc AVC or HEVC encoders. use the respective software ones like x264 or x265 which are much more accurate when working with variable bitrates. Fastflix is a good GUI frontend for FFMPEG and more.

I've found trying to encode using a PortableApp is slower that just by directly installing it. Probably because it has to go through the USB 3.1 and 3.2 channel first. It's a good way to try out these apps and see which ones you like, though...

I see... So you have to move to an alternative application. I don't care what others say, I use VirtualDub2 a lot. Yes, it is an old legacy VFW (Video For Windows) video editor, but it has a lot of filters I use, including one that can make the channel logo (or other annoying text) invisible! I can also correct colors and VHS artifacts and many more. Old is not necessarily obsolete and certainly not useless. The only drawback, there are no VFW codecs with hardware acceleration, but I can frame serve the result and render it on another application that supports NVEnc (nVidia CUDA) hardware acceleration, such as Handbrake. However, like I said, for accurate bitrate so the end result fits an empty disc I mostly use software encoding (x264vfw and x265vfw). I import to Handbrake and use hardware acceleration when I want specific settings without minding for the exact file size.

I used to use that. It's still a good program if you can get it to run in Windows 11.

Agree. I still use AVI ReComp for trimming the overscan strips and re-encoding old .avi videos I find. I also burn in subtitles with it from time to time. The developers for it have been long gone now so they don't even deal with it anymore. They mentioned they wouldn't extend it due to the new-found popularity of .mp4 and .mkv encoding, but I still have a need for it every now and again.

The owner of VideoRedo passed away. His wife knows nothing about how to continue the software or website. His partner setup a web page to reactvate version 6 if one has the correct code needed. it doesn't work for older versions. If I'm not mistaken the older free version can be found on videohelp.com.

The website didn't work, says I have the wrong system ID. When i installed it back in July it worked using the product key I got in the email. That no longer works either.

It was already previously activated, that's the problem. I've not made any hardware changes to trigger it. Activated on 23 July after a clean install, working fine. Not working when I tried to it the other day.

Many options on here for me to look at so hopefully I'll find something similar

The VideoRedo program was a program developed by a individual person from his house and he only had one person working with him. Dan suddenly passed away and his wife knows nothing about keeping the program or the activation web site active. It has nothing to do with the number of activations.
