Hi
Running the health check app on on laptop says that my machine meets all the requirements, including secure boot and TPM2.0, other than the processor but even this exceeds the minimum speed requirement. It is an Intel Core i5-6200U. Earlier suffixed U intel processors are supported back to i5-1345U and I am wondering if this is just that MS have not tested my particular processor. Or is the only test required run by the PC Health app?

Core i5-6200U is a 6th Generation CPU and the minimum I've seen on Microsoft's Intel CPU list for the i5 is an 8th Generation.

Thanks but the one I quoted is on the list: i5-1345U I take it that is a 1st Generation? But maybe I am missing something in the logic of the numbering.

Perhaps Intel made a change in their numbering and that's a 13th Generation? My response was only for the installed CPU. Whether a later version will work with the motherboard and RAM would be listed with the board's specs as to what it can accept. I have a machine with an Intel Core i7-4770 and it was reported as a 4th Generation.

It's just Intel's current way of referring to the generations of processors above the 9th generation. Read that as i5-1345U.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. The logic of the numbering has changed a few times over the years. Intel's page explaining the numbering has also changed over the years, now only explaining the latest generation.

I trawled back through the Internet Archive to get the pictures I've used below from their older versions of that page, here:

There never was a '1st generation', Intel now call that the 'Previous Generation'. They had a 3 digit SKU number, such as my System Two's i5 M 520.

From 2nd gen up to 9th gen they had a 4 digit number, the first digit being the generation and the other three the SKU.

From 10th gen on, the first two digits are the generation, with a two digit SKU.

As a test to see what may happen to an unsupported device running Windows 11 my System Two, a Legacy Bios laptop with a 1st gen i5, has been running Windows 11 since version 21H2 was first released in October 2021. So far it has got all the same updates as any supported device, with the exception of not being offered Feature Updates to the next version. For those a manual update and a workaround was used. It's now running the latest build of 23H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

I've been running 11 on a similar laptop for quite a while. (All requirements are met, except for a Gen6 CPU). The only upgrade from stock was swapping in a SATA SSD to replace its 1TB spinner, and (more recently) taking it to 20GB of RAM. (Factory was 6GB: 4 soldered plus a 2GB SODIMM.)

It runs, albeit slowly. Probably no more slowly than with Windows 10, its factory supplied OS. (It's a 2 core I3.) It also has, so far, received all Windows 11 updates. Some Microsoft employees hinted darkly in the past that updates might not be offered to systems with unsupported hardware, but that hasn't happened yet.

You should be able to upgrade 10 to 11 by adding a simple Registry key. I followed a similar procedure, although it may not have been exactly this one. (The installer just informed me that I was installing on unsupported hardware, and asked if I wished to continue. Maybe it was because my Windows 10 version was Home.)

I believe that has happened (yet) with feature updates. When I was running a non-compliant, I had to get the feature updates manually. That's no big deal, and not hard, but my point is that they weren't offered by WUpdate.

I have received the updates via WU. I'm not sure that I have gotten all updates to some of the apps (like Paint and Notepad).

Whether it matters that we are in different countries, I haven't the faintest idea.

I may have manually done a 22631 update prior to receiving 22631.3007.

Visiting uupdump.net is something I do far too often.

I kinda like uupdump. Cool service, and free.

But messing around with RP or beta releases is something I probably shouldn't do. (I avoid dev and canary builds, though.)

I was on my 2013 HP Envy 17 TS yesterday and got a security update when I checked in Windows Update. I think it may be wise to see what happens next Patch Tuesday, whether the unsupported machines keep going or start failing.
