Windows 11 24H2 has new hardware requirements.?


I have read a few articles where Windows 11 24H2 now requires a minimum of an Intel 11th Generation processor. When Windows 11 was first released, it was compatible with 8th generation processors.

My laptop (system #1) has a 10th generation Intel i7 processor. I was able to upgrade to 24H2 without issues a few months ago. Now wondering when 25H2 rolls around if this laptop will be considered unsupported? Well, I have almost 2 years before 24H2 reaches EOL

The good news is the fix has been gradually rolling out. I now have the fix on my Beta and RP builds. You should have it in the next build or two.

Yeah, but it's also a bug that should have been fixed a while back. Not like this is new. Was actually shocked to see it still here :oops:

Anyway, my point was only that even minor bugs still haven't been dealt with. But yes, they are rolling out fixes all the time... Known and Resolved issues for Windows 11 version 24H2

Another bug for us that use both Open Shell and Explorer Patcher is that the search box (or icon) disappears when there is some change on screen (change in resolution, enable/disable second monitor). To restore it we have to switch between search box and search icon so Explorer Patcher displays it again. This bug hasn't fixed in recent Open Shell update, let's hope a new Explorer Patcher version with fix it. Another minor bug is that when we click on search to find something, the taskbar color set in Open Shell is ignored and goes back to Windows default darker color. Why the default taskbar color is noticeably darker than the chosen color in Personalization? Is there any way to make it same to the chosen color? It usually switches back after a few seconds of closing the search window, but not always. Again to fix it we can switch between search box and search icon. Nothing serious, but annoying. If any developer is reading it, please fix it, thanks.

Because it is rather later and I am a little tired, can you please tell us what that means? Do we need an NPU to install 25H2? Or are specific updates only available at PCs with NPU? In the first case this is very serious as only the most new PCs will pass, in the second ace we simply don't care about Copilot and the relevant updates.

To be an 'AI PC' it must have an NPU. If that is capable of 40+MIPS then it is a 'Copilot+ AI PC', less than that it is 'just' an AI PC. No NPU, it's just a PC. Certain features depend on it being an AI PC, while features like Recall require it to be Copilot+.

Windows 24H2/25H2 can install and run on any of them. What you get depends on the class of PC.

An AI PC (even if below Copilot+ specs) has some extra functions if an NPU is present, Windows Studio Effects for example.

They're just missing on a PC without an NPU, that's all. Everything else in 24H2/25H2 works on any PC.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package. In-place upgrade to 24H2 using hybrid 23H2/24H2 install media. Upgraded to 25H2 by Enablement Package. Also running Insider Dev, and Canary builds and Windows 10 as native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

I’m still using Windows 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC, it’s still working great, probably going to stick with it as long as I can still receive security updates.
