For some enthusiasts, I think it's just the thrill of doing what they say you cannot do. And even when people upgrade their hardware, many still keep their old systems around and want to run some OS on it and just have another machine to tinker with. Seems they would prefer to use a supported Windows OS in most cases, hence their desire to run Windows 11.

LOL, well if they were actually using apple products they probably would complain.

I've had many complain when I discuss an apple product about how apple will only support the hardware for a short period of time and they feel they are being forced to upgrade, since the newest OS's will only run on the newer devices. Generally speaking, you get close to 10 years of supported OS's, and by then, it's probably not a bad idea to just get a new device.

You cannot make everyone happy all of the time.

My cut-off is around 2009, much earlier than that and I would agree that it's probably not worth it. But high spec (for the time) hardware can easily be the equal of modest spec supported hardware.

My System Two has a very much unsupported i5-520M from 2010, while my fully supported System Five has a modest Pentium Silver N5030 from 2020. Both multi-boot Win11, up to and including the latest 24H2 Canary build. There's little to choose between them in performance. A 4th gen i7 from 2014 would match my N5030 for speed, 5th gen of later can handsomely outperform it.

My main PC (2nd system specs) is a 3rd generation Intel Core-i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD and nVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti, not exactly "junk" or "obsolete", so it makes sense to bypass compatibility check and install Windows 11. For all of those that have some generations newer systems with 32GB RAM and upgrade in order to be Windows 11 compliant, I have to say they are either too rich to care or too scared to bypass compatibility check and install Windows 11 on "unsupported" hardware. That's exactly what Microsoft is trying to do. They try to make us think that if we dare install Windows 11 on "unsupported" hardware we will be the target of a million hackers, we will lose all our data and money from our bank account and we can even go to jail for crimes we never commited. As you understand all of these are BS, or should I say B$ to make us upgrade or replace our perfectly working PCs. And if we can afford it, OK. For all of us that cannot afford it, it's not OK at all!

I really don't *Get the whole "On no my CPU isn't supported when it's a i7 (I don't care what gen it is it'll support instruction 4.2) but it'll complain otherwise but that's where Rufus or Flyby comes in. Just my 2© Flyby

As I said, WE decide when our PC is obsolete, not Microsoft. And that is when is cannot do our job or our gaming anymore, not when some software gets old. At my job we still use Windows XP or 7 and Office 2000. We don't need anything newer. Similarly an old PC can play old games fine, so if you don't mind about new games, why replace it?

Has anybody actually gotten 22H2 to run on an i7-950? I tried this past week and it bluescreens after the second reboot. No problems running Windows 10. I also have a very similar system (same motherboard) with a Xeon W3690 that runs 22H2 just fine. I'm wondering if I found the inflection point where 22H2 won't work.

My Core i7 950 is the only computer I have left still running Windows 10. I haven't even tried upgrading it to Windows 11. I plan to keep one computer with Windows 10 for now.

Your BSOD sounds like a driver issue.

I tried a fresh install of Windows 11 on a blank SSD and it still didn't work. I checked the minidump with windbg and there's no driver in the crash stack, just the kernel. A bad driver could have corrupted something first, but again, this is the same motherboard with a different CPU that I know CAN run 22H2.

I didn't click the first time I read your post that you have 2 motherboards the same. One running Windows 11 and one that won't. But you may have different hardware plugged into the motherboard apart from the CPU. Also, I would disconnect any peripheral hardware.

Strangely, the one that works has all kinds of stuff plugged into it (including an ancient GPIB card). There was literally just a keyboard and mouse plugged into the one that didn't work. The GPUs are also different (working: GTX 2080Ti, non-working GTX 660) but since the 660 has drivers available for Windows 10/11 on nvidia's website I doubt that's the issue. I even tried disabling some of the on-board hardware (firewire ports, unused RAID controller, etc). The motherboards are different revisions: (working: GA-X58-UD3R rev 1.0, non-working GA-X58-UD3R rev 2.0)

I have a W3670 CPU on the way (same as the W3690, just a little slower AFAICT) to prove my theory. It was easier to buy a CPU from eBay for $9 than do a CPU swap between motherboards.

I could also swap GPUs, but that's a bit of a pain.

The oldest possible system I have installed Windows 11 23H2 was an Intel Pentium 640 3.2GHz socket 775 (1st Intel 64-bit family CPU) with 2GB RAM and 250GB IDE (aka PATA, not even SATA) hard disk drive. The GPU had no WDDM drivers, so it worked with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (aka VGA standard graphics without acceleration). Of course it took more than 1 hour to install and was slow as hell, but I did it to prove the Microsoft minimum requirements for Windows 11 are BS. In such old systems, there are not even Windows 7 64-bit drivers. No problem, I installed Vista 64-bit drivers. Yes, they worked, any Vista 64-bit or higher driver with rare exceptions works in Windows 7 64-bit or higher, including Windows 10 64-bit and 11.

They were BS, but I think that's changing. 24H2 is starting to use some newer instructions that aren't available on older CPUs. This makes sense - they've (mostly) successfully stood their ground on supported CPUs, and now they can set their compiler up to take advantage of these newer instructions which will result in faster operation. The alternative is to 1) not use them, 2) have branches in the code to take different paths when the instructions are/are not available, or 3) provide different compilations depending on the instruction sets being used. (1) and (2) result in slower code, (2) and (3) result in additional required testing. Microsoft has drawn the line and I expect they'll keep moving it. Right now the actual line appears to be ~10 (Intel) generations behind their stated requirement. I'm playing with 1st gen CPUs and having problems...

SSE4.2 instructions are available in the 1st generation Intel Core-i3 CPU or higher. This means you can install Windows 11 24H2 on the Intel Core-i7 975. Probably upgrade might be difficult due to many factors, but clean installation is possible.

In theory, yes. However, I'm having trouble on with an i7-950 with a clean installation. So I'm wondering if there's some other instructions (besides SSE4.2) that are required for 24H2.

Did you create install media using Rufus being sure check boxes to bypass cpu and ram requirements. You can also set Rufus to create a local account and bypass automatic device encryption.
