I'd appreciate the info on that WD in the desktop. Looks as though the WD runs much cooler in the laptop. Yes?

Now if you had just done what I suggested.... go to Home Depot, get an aluminum bar and glue it to the SSD... then the Samsung SSD would be running cool as could be.

Somewhere not too far below 40 degrees Celsius is actually better for the 3D NAND chips; they produce less read errors that way.

When I built this PC, I decided that a 550 MB/s SSD was fast enough for me.
I'm too old to need a 3500 or 7000 MB/s SSD.

LOL, it already boots so fast, I have trouble getting into the BIOS.
Complete restart is 39 seconds. And that's with Fast Boot disabled.

Isn’t the time allowed for pre boot BIOS access determined by a setting in your BIOS? I “Think” mine is. I may be wrong.

I'm thinking that when the budget allows, I might replace the 2-3-year old Samsungs with WDs.

This is probably because the Samsung drive is several years older than the WD drive. Technology has moved forward. Latest Samsung drives are much faster and the chips last much longer...not sure about temps though as the drives are really really fast compared to the ones compared in your post.

We’re all aware that technology has progressed, of course, but the question is about heat. Do your newer drives, or your smaller drives, or your drives from a different brand (especially) run cooler than your others?

My Samsung drives run pretty cool. Even my 970 EVO Plus:

I think it’s safe to assume that your temps are the result of your “whole schwak of Noctua fans,” a luxury I can’t afford in my SFF cases. Thanks very much though. It’s good to know that Samsungs can run that cool with proper cooling.

I've been using the WD Black NVME's for awhile now. Previously had been using Intel and Samsung drives.

4 years ago, when my son built his PC, WD had a pretty good deal going on the 1TB SN750 drive. We ended up buying 2 of those and they have performed great.

3 years ago, I built myself a new desktop, and I too went with a WD drive, the 2TB SN850. Mine idles in my box around 34-35 degrees. I have the little motherboard heatsink over it. I have a good airflow case and am using the standard 3 x 140mm fans that my Fractal case came with (I can run 9 fans total, but haven't felt the need for any more). highest i have ever noticed running the WD utility is about 47C. I'm sure under heavy loads when I am not watching it gets a bit higher, but haven't had any issues so not checking it really closely.

About 2.5 years ago, I built my wife a desktop, and did a 1TB SN750 in her box. She didn't really need the Gen 4 drive for what she does, so I saved some cash and went with the Gen 3 drive which has been great. It has no heat sink and have never noticed any heat related issues.

For Christmas, we bought our son a 4TB SN850x to replace one of his 1TB SN750's.....as he is a gamer and is always running out of space. He currently has an 8TB spinner in the box where he moves stuff too that he's not actively using. We haven't gotten around yet to installing his new drive and moving the data over to it, but once we do, just going to get him an external 10Gbps dock and put his 1TB SN750 into it to give him a fast portable drive.
