I can agree with that, but there is a difference of opinion I guess of what is actually old. I consider an 8th gen I5 to be old, but still pretty decent. There are a lot of older machines that can run windows 11 just fine and meet the requirements. You don't need anything fancy. I just think when you get close to 10 years old it needs to be recycled.

I don't. An 8th gen i5 is a supported cpu for Windows 11, and will run 24H2 without issues as it has the SSE4.2 instruction set.

Now my System Two with its 1st gen i5, that is old (2010 vintage) - still can run 24H2 though :wink:

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Heck, I'm and early 50's gen. I'm way ahead, not many cores, not much memory, but lots of threads holding me together. :-)

Probably depends on the platform. I tried putting Win 11 24H2 (without the tweaks) on an old Acer i5 2nd gen recently and it wasn't compliant. I haven't tried this with an X58 platform yet but I know it'll run Win 11 with a little TLC because I've done it at least three times on three different units.

My System Two runs 24H2 surprisingly well on its 1st gen i5, it does help that I've upgraded its RAM from 4GB to 8GB and replaced its HDD with an SSD. I have a fully supported Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1 with a Pentium Silver N5030 that's hardly any faster.

true. It all depends what your doing on the machine. I said an 8th i5 is still pretty decent, but it is old. I have one as my plex server, runs fantastic. Came out in 2017, 7 years ago. Yeah running a 1st gen i5 is pretty crazy ha. But hey if it works for what you need it to do that's awesome. I just think when you got a cpu pushing 10+ years it's time to be retired. A decade is a long time in computing. But of course if you can find creative uses for it that's awesome. I am mainly talking about a primary machine. There is just a lot of older machines you can pickup for next to nothing that are 8th gen or higher that can run circles around a 1st gen.

That's also a core i7 so it was a really good processor when it came out. It also depends on how fast it was at time of release of course. A celeron from that era would be horrible. But yeah I was used to the dial up days and I remember how slow everything was back then in general. It is amazing how far we have come. I still am amazed how the older processors still hold up. Just depends what your needs are. When I purchase a laptop I buy something way over what I need so that it lasts me a long time.

I never thought a gaming laptop could have insane power and get 8 hour battery life. But it's so possible now and it's crazy. I am also excited to see what ARM does. That's going to possibly be a huge game changer down the road.

You know what? When people call me and ask what laptop to buy, which I hate being asked because research is now almost impossible with the amount of laptops available, I just say “Buy a gaming laptop” because any laptop that can run the resource intensive games they make now, could run anything.

Odd! I just created an ISO from the latest 24H2 at UUPDump. Used Rufus to create a bootable flash drive. Installed clean on my test bench. It rebooted twice before getting to the point of applying the OOBE bypass where it rebooted again.

Asus TUF Z690-Plus Wifi motherboard using a i7-12700k, 32 GB DDR5 memory. Install reboots fine but I haven't installed any drivers. Not sure what issue I might expect from the USB drive. I'm going to install clean again. The new/updated Win11 installer if VERY different than previous versions. Completely new UI. Even the bootable flash drive shows as available during the install process.

Hope you could keep this thread (or a new one) up to date as you go through this. Sure, I could try this on one of my three laptops and may at some point, but collecting info from other's experience is sensible, I think, so I'm grateful for your comments.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. I don't bother to modify the flash drive, I just use Shift+F10 to open a command prompt and run this little batch file.
(unless you count copying the batch file to the flash drive a 'modification')

I'm just running the 4790K 32 Gigs of ram, and 2 GB Radeon GDDR5 video card, with the Xfinity high speed 1000mb internet service. This setup is fastest enough for all my needs, I still have to buckle up, before turning my PC on. :-)

Okay I installed 24H2 clean again but on a similar system as the OP. An older Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 AM3+ motherboard using an AMD FX-6300 cpu. I created a bootable flash drive using Rufus which automatically added the hardware bypasses so it would install. This cpu does have SSE4.2 support. Installation was similar to above test. 2 reboots followed by OOBE bypass for a 3rd reboot. System up and running fine and reboots okay. I used to newer UI vs attempting access to the old UI installer.
All the hardware was recognized by the clean install. Will let it update via MS Update to see what else happens.
Call me curious what ISO the OP was able to dig up.
