Non sequitur: I have a Windows 95 VM set up *exactly* the way my long-departed Pentium 120 machine had been in 1995 - same wallpaper, 1024 x 768 resolution, Doom, Encarta 95, Office 95 and Netscape Navigator. It tickles me pink. Have magnanimously decided to run with 512MB of RAM instead of the measly 32MB of the original. The little things in life do matter.

You guys still don't use DNS over HTTP?

RMaHpD.png

Main Advantages of DNS over HTTPS (DoH)

  • Enhanced Privacy Traditional DNS queries are sent in plain text, meaning ISPs or attackers can see which websites you visit. DoH encrypts these queries using HTTPS, hiding your browsing activity from third parties.
  • Protection Against Manipulation DoH prevents malicious actors from intercepting and altering DNS responses (man-in-the-middle attacks), ensuring you reach the correct website.
  • Leverages HTTPS Infrastructure Since it uses the same protocol as secure websites, DoH benefits from TLS certificates and authentication mechanisms already widely deployed.
  • Resistance to Censorship and Blocking In some regions, DNS queries can be filtered or blocked. DoH makes censorship harder because the traffic looks like normal HTTPS web traffic.

  • Things to Keep in Mind

  • Latency: Encryption and HTTPS transport can add a small delay compared to plain DNS.
  • Centralization: Many users rely on big providers (Google, Cloudflare), concentrating browsing data in fewer hands.
  • Configuration: Not all systems support DoH by default; manual setup may be required.
✅ Conclusion: If your goal is privacy and security, DNS over HTTPS is a clear improvement over traditional DNS. Modern browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Edge already support DoH, and enabling it can make your browsing safer and less exposed to monitoring.

Quad9 (9.9.9.9) as Primary DNS, and Cloudflare (1.0.0.1) as Secondary DNS. I play some online games once in awhile - and Cloudflare is really bad at it in EU (random latency spikes - rather huge at times) - but still good for web in general. Quad9 is the fastest and most stable in West Europe. Google is also stable - but slower (higher latency).

You mean HTTPS. I have since it got stable. I think most people are posting their dns service, not protocol. I wouldn't be using cloudflare if it were not for their supporting DoH.

Enhanced Privacy Traditional DNS queries are sent in plain text, meaning ISPs or attackers can see which websites you visit. DoH encrypts these queries using HTTPS, hiding your browsing activity from third parties.
most often an attacker can figure out what site you visit anyway.
So with regular DNS you see facebook.com... okay so you visit facebook... using DoH you will still be able to pick up the ip of the site you visit 57.144.252.1 and a fast lookup will reveal its the IP of facebook.com.

But DoH is really good way to bypass if your router or pi-hole has rules to block out ads, malware or adult websites.

So what DNS do i use... My VPN providers DNS server
