If you plan to take it to the center, it might be worthwhile just formatting and cleanly installing Windows on the machine. Nice, pristine interface and settings to play with, too.

Since you've had financial info on the machine, it wouldn't hurt to fully format the system partition at the very least, too. Better to protect yourself.

Even better, grab a new HD / SSD to throw in there that has had no previous information and and clone the recovery partition and restore the original OS as it came from HP - if you still have that. If not, even better - clean install 10 and 11 in dual boot on a new HD and be done with it - never letting your old drive with personal data ever leave the house.

(If you cannot tell, I'm paranoid like that)

And now, folks, it's time to make my decision, taking into account all the great information provided by such generous individuals.

I must say I've learned a lot about comparing systems; more than I ever thought was out there. I've been helping some of my students buy new systems, and now with what I've learned, I can give even better advice to them!

So, now to announce my decision . . . no surprise here, I'm sure.

With everything I've learned, it's a no-brainer that I will keep the Intel i7 machine here at the house, and will take the AMD system to the Senior Center. It's a win-win situation for both my students and myself.

And now, I must press the Solved button! That is, if I can find it in ElevenForum!

Well.. being AMD since my student days when I went for affordable to now when I can choose which Ryzen (to an extent)...

I'm glad I was never Intel.

Yeah, sorry about that. I accidently quoted for the i7-10700K, which is 125W TDP

That's a bit paranoid, all right.

I'd probably just scrub the drive with a single-pass overwrite utility. (The free version of CCleaner includes such a tool. It also has more advanced multi-write capabilities.) Maybe that wouldn't prevent data from being recovered by the NSA, but I think that it would foil commercial data recovery software. Assuming that any of your students would be that nosy.

That would be complicated by it being an OS drive. I have an external dock for 2.5" and 3.5" SATA drives, plus an external enclosure for NVME M.2 drives, so I'd be covered for that. I overwrote a 2.5" 500GB spinner the other day - took less than 2 hours.

This is just a suggestion. Please do whatever you're comfortable with.

I wasn't worried about the students. I was worried about what might happen if the machine is stolen out of the teaching center.

Uhhhhhh, I guess I forgot to mention my security system.

The "box" is housed in a cabinet in the Boardroom of the Sr. Center. I have a bicycle lock with a long shank on the handles of the two cabinet doors. It's completely secure since I have the only key. It's a simple matter to open the cabinet, pull out cables and wires (attached to the computer and peripherals), and hook things up, reversing the order when class is over.

Lol. Not paranoid at all. In this day and age, you can almost guarantee someone, somewhere is out to get you - maybe not by directly targeting you all the time, but eventually, someone will do their utmost best to try and take advantage of you, somehow, someway.

0 trust is not just a concept to me - I employ it as much as possible.

The IT Department of CADC has given me permission to have my way with the computers in the Center, IOW, keep them updated. They told me the ancient computers we used to have in the lab wouldn't update to Windows 10. I told them they could, and I was given permission to "try" to prove me wrong. Hahaha, I had the last laugh and 12 computers were updated to Windows 10. [At the time we needed them so I could teach Windows 10.]

So, I guess I'm to be trusted with that. We placed signs all over the place not to put personal information on them, but did they read? Probably not, because we found all kinds of personal info!

The latest batch of computers replaced those ancient ones, and I'm not sure if they will update to Windows 11. However, since we outgrew the lab space and are now in the Board Room for our lessons, I no longer take responsibility for the newest machines unless asked.
