Who's Keeping Windows 11?

Basically I'm a Windows Desktop sorta guy, mainly because they can be repaired much easier than MACs which are generally unrepairable for people like me.
My other desktop PC was built (to my spec) in April 2011 and still running Win 10, with lots of bespoke KiXtart software.
It's had various things done to it, such as new power supply, added discs, added SSD drive for OS etc.
How many MAC machines are over 11 years old and still going strong.
My main problem has been windows updates and sadly this is the first year ever that I have had to do a complete OS install of any type.

That's an INTERESTING question, if you're someone who has no alliance to Mac or PC but simply wants the best value. For me that means I can afford Macs but haven't really seen the value since Windows 10. I don't need the BESTEST PCs that can chew thru 8K raw video. Almost no one does. I also don't need a cinematographers dream smart phone either. It's such a scam.

The one thing I do need is for Windows to understand they exist with a world of better operating systems. Mac OS and iOS and Android are simply smoother operating systems. They all seem years of ahead of Windows. I don't love Chrome OS but Zorin is amazing (in concept, not stability.)

So two IMPORTANT things have happened since Windows 10 --

1. Apple's M1 chip
2. Windows 11

Before these events I could look straight in most Mac users eyes and say, "Trust a guy that used Apple products for 29 years and sold them for 3.5 years: you're being played. Most people don't need Macs or iPhones."

Now it's very different. It's different because, once again, MS released a patently incomplete operating system. The 2nd draft. Other companies would have release the 18th draft and it would have fixed everything the Feedback Hub is yelling about.

At the moment I'm not convinced MS is going to fix any of the major design flaws. Instead they're going to fixate on other ideas that -- mostly likely -- will be invasive ads that users summarily reject. And so if I see history repeating itself in the next year --

-- I'm going to eventually dump two of my four PCs for Macs. Because I cherish quiet PCs. And PC chips must improve. They don't have to match M1 or surpass, mind you. Again: most of us aren't movie makers, musicians, or graphic artists.

So the question for me is not if I'll keep 11. The question is if it's worth keeping a year from now. I try to be optimistic but MS actions speak louder than MS words.
An interesting view but lacking any quantifiable content to backup the negatives, i.e., what do these statement mean:
- "iOS & Android are smoother operating systems"
- "released a patently incomplete operating system"
- "fix any of the major design flaws"

Not one bit of that commentary made sense to me.
1. What processors was he comparing to the M1? The Ryzen 7/9 or Intel 7/9 match or surpass the M1.
2. How is OSx better than Windows and which version is he comparing??
3. How is Win 11 incomplete and what flaws does it have? Is this just an opinion or are there facts to back any of this up with??

I'm also at a confusion, mainly in that Mac OS X has been discontinued and now is macOS, they've also dropped Intel CPUs in changing to the M1. My MacBook Pro of mid-2010 died during the Upgrade to macOS [drive controller failed].

MS must be doing something right with Win 11. I installed it on my wife's laptop on the 4th of October and I still haven't heard any complaints. If she had any problems, she wouldn't hesitate to let me know.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

Hi,
Probably most are using workarounds to install 11 seeing ms said people can't have 11 on older systems so they install it for kicks just to prove they can lol

I did a clean install on a fully compliant system without any issues (system one in system spec). Nor do I have any show stopping issues now.

I suspect those with the most issues are running "unsupported" systems. Also, like every other OS before, software/hardware compatibility can cause issues; so if you're running software/hardware from 2001, expect issues.

The other issues is where many don't update drivers or software cause well... "if it ain't broke don't fix it". The problem here is this attitude doesn't work in the world of computers.

That said, no... Windows 11 isn't perfect. But I can't seem to remember the last "perfect" OS produced ;)

like every other OS before, software/hardware compatibility can cause issues; so if you're running software/hardware from 2001, expect issues.
Certainly for hardware, less so for software - or at least for my 'vintage' collection of software, such as Paint Shop Pro v7.04 (Build Date Jul 13 2001).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop.

Upgraded from Win 10 to Win 11 on 22/10/21.
@BaJohn easy way to find out is to make an image copy of current OS, upgrade to Win 11 and try if. If it does not work then restore the image copy. Alternative would be to set up a VM and restore the image copy there, do the upgrade and test.

An interesting view but lacking any quantifiable content to backup the negatives, i.e., what do these statement mean:
- "iOS & Android are smoother operating systems"
- "released a patently incomplete operating system"
- "fix any of the major design flaws"

- "iOS & Android are smoother operating systems"

Of iOS it's been said a child can simply pick it up and start using it. It's THAT intuitive. Since Android is basically iOS, it's almost as simple. (I celebrate the more choices Android offers. Both systems awake from sleep with ease and are SHOCKINGLY stable during normal use.

- "released a patently incomplete operating system"

Who releases an OS with dark mode that doesn't work in most/all system apps? Who releases an OS with two different system settings apps? Who releases operating systems that include apps from prior systems with different looks and feels? Of the mentioned systems -- only Microsoft does this.

- "fix any of the major design flaws"

Hit the Feedback Hub. Anything with over 10,000 likes is a major design flaw. One of the most embarrassing is that MS decided nobody needs to create app folders in the Start Menu. Also that dark mode isn't close to universal. Also the taskbar can't be relocated to the side or top. Also that you can no longer drag desktop items over an app in the taskbar, trigger that app to appear on top, and then continue dragging that item into that apps window.

I'm been using Windows since 10 and what I notice is that Microsoft spends a lot of time trying to shove into the OS things people don't want instead of LISTENING TO THOSE WHO CARE and making the OS more modern like its competitors.

When people hear this note they think I'm saying 'make it as good as a Mac if not better'. Nope. That's not it.

Think of a normal car, okay? There are things it can have and things it must have. Maybe Toyota has a new car that runs on seawater! Wowee wow! And the by product is CLEAN WATER! Holy crepe! Wouldn't that be awesome.

Apple/Google/Android/Linux would release such a car that basically works or better.

Microsoft would release such a car that basically works... but the car would have 3 tires on 4 wheels. When you look out the windshield you'd see News you don't want to look at. And when users begged for 4 tires they'd instead get... a new screen on the dashboard that shows you the weather outside.

******************

Maybe Microsoft has learned that people seem to like be treated like garbage. I mean Apple just introduced this --

If I have to explain to you what's wrong in that image virtually everything I will say to you won't make any sense.

Design flaw? You only see the negative and not the users that like that feature. Bottom line Win 10/11 just work.. and that's all that maters to the vast majority of users. The OS is there to run apps/software and as long as it does that I'm happy

I am for sure going to stay with windows 11 (IF and ONLY if) MS allow me to do so and give me updates as I am using it on my non compliant laptop. I have an old HP Elitebook 8770W work station with 3rd gen CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz. I have TMP 1.2 and secure boot. Windows 11 in running perfect on this laptop (Smoother then windows 10) and having it for a week I have not encountered ANY problem!
I use Adobe premiere and do a lot of video editing and it's faster then on win10.

Now what was the best surprise for me is that I use Studio One and Cubase for music recording (Loaded with audio effect plugins and VSTi) and never in my life I possessed a PC that would pass latency test with latency monitor. For the first time I am seeing this beautiful message:
Screenshot 2021-10-31 020156.png

Not that with windows 10 I was not able to work! latency monitor would say that my PC can't handle real time audio but it ALMOST did OK.
With Win11 (all plugins enabled) I record live instruments for hours without even one pop or click.

All my other software are running fine and even the start menu and context menu are starting to make sens and I like it. (This part can't be discussed as it's a matter of taste) And I am saying to myself that this is just a new released OS and should get even better (Fingers crossed).

I don't think you can simply generalize it that way, it's not that cut and dry.
There's just too many millions of users with different scenarios and different devices and different productivity flows, etc.
