Why did the screen become black?

I bought my Lenovo Legion laptop on May 2025 and it has an RTX 4090 graphics card. I connected it to the tv by using an HDMI cable next month.

Yesterday morning the laptop was idle and I wasn't using it. First the TV screen became black and only the mouse pointer showed and then the laptop screen became black and then the mouse pointer showed and then the picture came back on both screens. I checked the event viewer. I found that the Desktop Window Manager has registered the session port eventid 9027 and it happened at the same time as when the flickering happened. Also I got two of these after that event:

The issue happened again yesterday night when the laptop was idle. I did search for eventid 9027 in the event viewer and I saw that I got it 7 times so far:

They were spread out in the past and I only noticed it when the issue happened the last two times.

Is my HDMI cable failing? Long ago when I was on my previous gaming laptop and it was connected to the TV by using an HDMI cable both the TV and the laptop screen flickered black when I was playing a game and I found that the issue happened because of the HDMI cable became bad.

Is it an Nvidia driver issue? I have been on 3 different Nvidia drivers since May 2025 and it looks like I got eventid 9027 when I was on different versions.

Is it an HDMI handshake issue? Maybe Windows tried to set the Nvida card to low power mode and that caused the Nvidia driver to freeze so the HDMI handshake needed to be reinitialized?

I did the following things:

1) I disabled MPO by setting OverlayTestMode to 5 in DWM in regedit
2) I set TdrDelay to 8 in regedit
3) I enabled maximum performance for power management mode in the 3d settings in the Nvidia control panel

Will they stop the issue from happening?

My guess is that probably a screensaver tried to display without success. To check if you have a screensaver and what is the time out go to Settings, Personalization, Lock Screen, and click on Screen saver. If you have a screensaver, click on Preview to test it.

Also the screen might time out and when moving the mouse no both internal and external monitors wake up at the same time and hence the black period. From the previous screen click on Screen timeout to see what it is. From there you can also disable it.

Yes, probably there is a screen timeout and after resuming from it Windows need 1-2 seconds to identify connected monitors again, hence the black screen. Probably some application prevents the computer to sleep causing it to wake up instantly and Windows looking for the connected monitors. Disable screen timeout to fix it. You can set the screensaver to blank screen instead of turning off the screen or just leave a beautiful screensaver playing when idle. I use a nice aquarium.

What do you mean? I have already set screen switch to never in the edit power plan settings.

Will the 3 fixes that I mentioned up help?

You mention you've used 3 different drivers. Are you presently using the newest? Gaming or Studio?

I am on Game Ready driver version 581.80.

I'd try the newest. If that doesn't work I would delete all the drivers and uninstall the graphics card. Makes sure Windows update is enabled and reboot. Take any precautions you feel are necessary like copy of latest driver, restore point, etc. Just guessing you have a CPU with video also since you don't list it in your specs. It could also be something on the Intel settings side. I have my RTX3060 set as the primary video card and display.

This is what Intel Command Center shows since I have primary GPU set to Nvidia.

You should tweak nVidia from nVidia Control Panel.

Why would you think that an Intel app would have any control of nVidia.

I don't. I was showing what Intel reports if the display output is set correctly to the nVidia GPU.
