Why is my Win 11 at "end of service"?

Win 11
Windows 11 tells me that "Your version of Windows has reached the end of service." However, I'm on Win 11 (on this system), not Win 10. Apparently it's Win 11 Pro, Version 10.0.22621 Build 22621. And when I click "Check for Updates", it says "You're up to date". I have "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" turned off (so my machine doesn't restart when I don't want it to).

Windows 11 yes, but different builds. Yours is 22H2, but can't update to 23H2 since Windows is now at build 24H2 (released in past months). And apparently - it can't update from 22H2 to 24H2 (or maybe not available yet for your system). You either download the latest: Download Windows 11 and could try an in-place upgrade:


...or you could go with 23H2 - but only available in unofficial sources like: category:w11-23h2 - Browse known builds (this build will last you for almost another year till reaching EOL).

This is known bug, your 22H2 (22621) has not reached EOL yet, that's not until Oct 8, 2024.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro.

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

The upgrade from 22H2 build 22621 to 23H2 build 22631 is performed just by installing a small enablement package. This installs like a CU, there's no large download or a widows.old folder afterwards, You can download and install it here...

OK, good to know. But before I follow others' instructions to do an "in place upgrade", why didn't Windows Updates keep me at the current version? I run it regularly, at least once a month.

Should I be nervous about this? It's like, everything breaks Windows nowadays.

EDIT: Nevermind. I can't even start until I recover my Administrator account. How do I do that? (Bear in mind that I have to go to work now, so I won't answer for a while).

'CU' is an abbreviation for 'Cumulative Update', the sort of updates you typically get each month. These install patches and update to the system, then require a reboot to take effect. The enablement package does the same thing, but its job is to turn on the dormant 23H2 features, and increase the build number from 22621 to 22631.

The first of 22H2's CU that contained the dormant 23H2 code was KB5031455 (OS Builds 22621.2506), you need to be on at least build 22621.2506 to be able to install the enablement package. Check your build by running Winver.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Probably cause current/latest official build is 24H2. That Enablement Package for changing the build from 22H2 to 23H2 - was more of an upgrade "trick" - since both builds share the same system files (not the case anymore with 24H2).

1) while regularly making system backup images is recommended, it’s not mandatory for this instance as nothing will break. No system files are replaced from 22h2 to 23h2. It’s only a CU.

2) recover your admin account? Your current user profile does not have administrative rights?

A system image is like a photocopy of your entire C Drive. When you run into problems you can’t fix, you run the recovery process and take your PC back to the way it was before the issue. Back to the state you created the image because you were satisfied that Windows was running well.
A 1TB drive as a backup drive is suggested, min 500GB. It can be an internal or external drive, preferably an SSD

A system image is different to a Restore Point, a system image is a complete replacement for the PC to go back to a previous state. A Restore Point may not always get you out of trouble.

I and others use Hasleo Free, many here use Macrium reflect (version 8 free still laying around somewhere, new version Ten is a subscription based software) There are also others like AOMEI Backup etc

Basically, when you restore an image to your hard drive, it puts windows back on plus everything else - it has your programs, files and everything as you had it before you made the image. It's a good thing to do before any major change or upgrade, so if it goes wrong, you can just restore the image and you're back to where you started.
