MS has gone overboard.
Yes they own the software. What they don't own is the MS Settings "choices" I have made.

Like the Taskbar icons "size" settings. They DIS-enabled their own registry setting for the small Taskbar icons.
The small Taskbar icons (just for one example), don't affect MS or the operation of Windows 11.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope I am wrong.

But what gets me, is that Microsoft has made it so you can’t even have your default browser open a search result due to their Edge specific protocols. (I know there is a really good work around)

Uninstalling Edge (without something like the above linked Discover and Hotfixes app) and clicking on a search result, results in a message telling you that there is no app for that.

In my opinion, this goes against the findings of the US vs Microsoft legal case. But, I am not a lawyer so…

All meaning, if they can’t enforce those findings, what good is congress?

I just adapt. It doesn’t affect me in the slightest.

@ArthurDent It’s a matter of setting up your PC to work for you.

To be honest, I don’t interact with Microsoft on my PC unless it’s to suggest fixes for people with problems in here.
This is from get-go. I install Windows, I add Start11, I apply tweaks with reg files found in tutorials here, I no longer need to interact with Microsoft Windows less that fact I log in and that it supports the software I am using.
Windows no longer dictates how my system is configured as I have bypassed everything.

Start11 or StartIsBack are probably a good start to a less stressful experience.

Uninstalling Edge (without something like the above linked Discover and Hotfixes app) and clicking on a search result, results in a message telling you that there is no app for that.

In my opinion, this goes against the findings of the US vs Microsoft legal case. But, I am not a lawyer so…

All meaning, if they can’t enforce those findings, what good is congress?

I've done pretty much the same thing.
I've modified as much of W11 as I could, use Open Shell Menu (similar to Start 11), use a firewall to block what I can't modify and now my new laptop is pretty much the way I want it. Even MS office has no internet access since I don't need it to and I don't use Outlook.
W11 came with my new laptop and I was horrified how intrusive it was. Maybe I forgot how W10 was before I modified it. But anyway, the first 10 days with the new laptop were quite stressfully but now all is finally well. As a bonus, W11 seems faster and snappier than W10 was on my old laptop.
The few things I can't change I live with. Life is sweet again.

I don't think it a matter of MS thinking they know better. It's just part of the OS that gets updated or changed back to default with the update. Could they make it so the Start Menu doesn't change when doing an update? Probably. Will they? I doubt it.

When you install Open Shell, make a backup of all your settings. You can click on the backup button at the bottom of it's Settings Menu and save it as an XML file. Then when MS pulls it's update bullsh*t again, just reinstall to the latest version of Open Shell and import that saved XML file back in so you can get your old menu settings back.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass, but you do what you gotta do. Then repeat the process again the next time an update occurs.

Gotta work around it, if ya know when I mean. I don't like it but there it is.

I'm obviously in the minority on this forum. I like Windows 11. I honestly don't feel the need to make Windows 11 look like or work like an earlier Windows version. For me Windows 11 is rock solid reliable. YMMV
