Why Windows 11 is a Big Deal to Me

Same with Windows 95 full from 1.44 MB Floppy. Though not quite 52 disks, I think, it was 30-something....

OMG, that brings back bad memories. I was working in Tech Support back when Windows NT first came out and it was available on either diskettes or CD. I can't tell you often I had to sit through an installation of Windows NT from floppy disks!

I think when I did that I was lucky and had the CD to upgrade from. Good think I didn't have anything important to get done.. it took most of the day to install OS/2.

App is short for application. Which ALL programs are.

Similarly, PCs are only one type of Personal Computing Device, shortened to devices. Because, in case you missed it, Windows 11 is being developed for more than just 'PCs'.

Actually, no, not all programs are applications. If I write a program to solve a differential equation (or perform any other narrowly specialized task), then it's not an application. So all applications are programs, yes, but not all programs are applications.

The fact that Windows 11 is being developed for more then just PCs is in fact bad practice. There is absolutely no need for phones and tablets to have the same OS as PCs. Also special service devices (ATMs, cashier machines in shops, all kinds of automated kiosks, etc.) should not have the same OS as PCs sold to general public. And so on. Same as cats and Netflix should not be on the same network as essential infrastructure, the OS used in all kinds of industrial devices should not be the same Windows as that on our PCs.

Same here.,. I had to find a reason to get some new bits and here it is
I got the I want a new desktop fever shortly before I heard the rumors about Windows 11. One night I turned on my desktop and it refused to boot because the CPU fan stopped working. I needed a 4 wire fan and the local Electronics / Radioshack store only had 3 wire fans and the tech had gone home and the sales person didn't know if it would work. Luckily I still had my old non working desktop and it had a 4 wire fan. This put the idea that it's been awhile so It's time to upgrade. Now I have 2 desktops and 3 monitors surrounding me. Before I decided to upgrade I went ahead and ordered a spare fan from Amazon. It took over a month for the fan to be delivered.

I need at least a new processor to meet 11 requirements and then I think I want a dedicated GPU. From there a new case would be nice.. I really dislike the one I currently have it's a pain to mount storage devices and the PSU.

Many interesting words, but I'm still sitting here, after reading all that, with my original question......
Why would I or any PC user want or need Windows 11?

TM
I want it because it's new and I enjoy testing the newest builds on the Insider Dev Ring. As for needing it. If it wasn't for the end of support I would be happy using Windows 7.

I did take the video card from my old desktop and installed it in the my new desktop. I'm using the onboard video on the old desktop for now . I do have another video card that I may install in the old desktop some day.

Still available for d/l still as zipfiles at Windows 95 RTM - however, there are fewer 5.25" (21), and even fewer 3.5" (DMF)(13 + bootdisk) floppy disks than you remember:

Uh, they've got those backwards.

The Full install is 21 diskettes and the upgrade is 13. Yes, not 30 something, I was remembering both sets together.

I have the physical disks right here.

I also have the diskettes for Windows 3.1 install and 3.11 upgrade.

Hi there
Uh, they've got those backwards.

View attachment 2556

I also have the diskettes for Windows 3.1 install and 3.11 upgrade.
I remember the original Word For Windows V 3.11 - 25 or so diskettes (1.44 size) and I/O error on disk 21 -- no Amazon in those days so had to wait about 5 -10 days for another set of diskettes to try and re-install !!!! -- was brilliant when the whole thing could be installed via a CD. !!

That was just Word for Windows -- not the whole Office suite like we have today !!!!

Cheers

Two things that annoy me intensely, calling programs apps and refering to a PC as a device, my PCs are not flipping phones and I don't think they will fit in my pocket!
Absolutely agreed, Clam! I wouldn't even call my cell phone a device . . . it's a phone, fer goo'ness sake!

I pitched all of that out when my late husband and I moved to Arkansas. Somehow moving from one state to another helps one get over the hoarding thing.

It is common sense most people would want to go to the latest and greatest and that includes WINDOWS. I think alot of people will wait it out for a while though as Windows 10 is still good for a few more years.

I'm pretty sure those who have systems that can't run Windows 11 will wait; however, as hardware begins to fail, more and more folks will be forced to upgrade.

Those of us who have systems that can run Windows 11 will be more inclined to upgrade. It's just the nature of the beastie . . .

I remember beta testing Windows 95 and having to download new builds overnight with a 33.6K phone modem.
