Edwin, if you look at it from a business point of view, like the sales people will, we and the other home users who buy Windows with a system or like most of us here get free copies through updates to older versions are not the most important..

The people who's ideas are important to the sales department at Microsoft are the Systems admins and IT directors at the companies and enterprises who actually pay for every copy of windows they use

The funny thing is that I come from being one of those System Admins / IT manager roles and at that point the less available options in an OS or a Software package had the better it was, basic stuff was OK but anything too intricate had to be locked down solid which of course costs the company money

What people are not blinking getting is that they could use the new style BUT allow us to customise it as well! What possible reason could they have to REMOVE features. So sure, you will never please everyone totally, but they have gone out of their way to annoy a large fraction of users as you can see from replies here which are very divided.

If you want simple, don't customise - for the rest of us GIVE US BACK THE OPTIONS!

I don't worry much about menus, I remember too well back in the '90s and MS-DOS 5 with Windows 3.1 running on it and not much mouse support like we started getting with Windows 95, still have a small working Notebook with MS-DOS 6 and Win3.1.

I'm not nuts about the Start Menu in the center!
I'm accustomed to throwing my cursor down to the bottom left hand corner, without looking, to open the Start Menu.
I'm not gonna modify that muscle memory!

Depends on how often do you use such shortcuts. Personally, I don't use them often enough to remember, the only ones I remember are CTRL-C and CTRL-V and they don't work in Emacs :wink:

Wouldn't that be were the difference between the Enterprise and Home versions come into play?

Apparently not. The Home version lacks Group Policy, a couple of other features like that which I don't recall since I don't use Home, and has no control over updates. That's it.

I don't see how MS can get the Start Menu right. We all have our own idea of what it right to us. IMHO the best they could do is to allow us to customize the Start Menu. If Not, I have become accustomed to the Start Menu in Windows 11 so I can live with it.

Not really as there would be no advantage to Microsoft having two completely different forms of Windows - they will make the system meet the requirements of the Business's and take out things to make them more suitable for Home use - enthusiasts tend to use Pro systems to retain some control rather than use the Phone OS that Home is become simple to use for not computer literates

If they had a true customisable version for the enthusiast market the real unit cost to the individual would be way too high for those who normally pay nothing or a subsidised price with the hardware.

We have all got too used to the price we pay and complain loudly if we ever have to pay the subsidised price never mind what the true price of a fully customisable windows built from the ground up would be

In any case there is no financial incentive for Microsoft to develop a special customisable version- if the paying customers want more security, control and non customisable Windows OS that's what everyone will get

It's not ideal but Microsoft are not philanthropists they are a business
