Win 11 Pro changed to Insider Preview

My previous thread go wrongly moved to the Office section.

Update last week changed my Win 11 Pro to Insider Preview. Backed out fine. 2nd update that week made it Insider Preview again. I had bought the license from one of those cheap places. It registered fine. But I wonder if the original source of the license number was some company with extra licenses. And they have done something that made all their licenses Insider Preview.

So I gave in and paid the behemoth their pound of flesh and bought a license from MS. Downloaded the ISO. Did an in place update. Put in my legit license number. Still shows as Insider Preview. Belarc Advisor says I have 2 license numbers. The new one is the current one.

I really don’t want to do a clean install.

First of all, if you downloaded the iso thru media creation tool, it would have downloaded the insider iso because the tool downloads the version you are running if you do not choose otherwise.. You would need to go here, scroll down to

    System 3 is non compliant Dell 9020 i7-4770/24gb ram Win11 PRO 26200.8457
I downloaded the Windows 11 (multi-edition) ISO. Did not use the media creation tool. My Insider Panel looks like the following. The Leave function requires an email address. No idea what one it wants since I never signed up. If it is offering the Becoming option I must not be in it. How do I get around the problem shown by the 2nd image.

If You’re on the Dev or Canary Channel, I think you’re out of luck

No, licence keys do not come as specifically 'Insider' keys, they are all just keys that activate Windows of any sort.

A PC has to be enrolled in Insiders to start getting Insider builds.

Whether you have to do a clean install depends on which Insider channel you are now on, they are all described as 'Insider Preview builds'. To tell which you have we need to know the build number shown in Winver.

The Insider channels are Release Preview (26100.nnnn), Beta (26120.nnnn), Dev (26200.nnnn) and Canary (278nn.1000). Only leaving Canary would require a clean install.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

I have never signed up for any special program. This showed up with last Tuesdays update. I reverted it on Wednesday. On Thursday another update happened and I was back in the program. I did the update install yesterday with a true MS license and Win 11 ISO. No change. Both ChatGPT and Grok say if winver shows Verson 24H2 26100.4652 I am on a stable release. I turned off the desktop version display for now. I used it when I was switching between Win 10 and Win 11 machines. Now that I am only Win 11 I suppose I don't need it.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Have you made any other registry tweaks, not through gpedit?

I see from your screenshot that you are using a local account. You cannot normally enrol a PC for Insiders without using a Microsoft account. There is a script that can do so though:

I am on Dev ( went from Beta to Dev when I moved to 55H2) I just applied the first autoupdate for 55H2 dev to both test PCs (i7 Desktop and HP laptop (Pentium N)

Option 4 should remove all Insider flighting settings from the registry. Has it changed the look of your Insider settings page?

That may have gone, but it's still missing something. It should either say 'Join the Windows Insider program' with a 'Get started' button, or show that you're an Insider, what level, and with a 'Leave Insiders' option. Yours has neither of these.

I suspect you may have made some other registry changes that have hidden these options.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
