Win 11 Sleep Issue?

I've got a Lenovo laptop running win 11. latest updates. I am wondering if windows ever sleeps because with the lid closed and supposedly sleeping I have an external usb drive I see quite a bit of activity on. The light flashes for a long time after the lid is closed.
Just curious if anyone else has noticed this on their system.

While the computer is going to sleep I guess it saves any data to the USB and this is what you see. After a while the USB LED should switch off.

Windows 11 can S3 Sleep on some computers.

1 Please run this command in any cmd or PS window and post the results so your available sleep states can be seen
PowerCfg -a

2 You have not said what you have set as the lid close action in your Power options, Choose what the power buttons do.

3 You can monitor sleep transitions in Event viewer.

Sorry, you missed out the top section, The following sleep states are available on this system.

I have never seen a response without that top section and, if the command really didn't show anything in the top section, I think it would have to mean that no sleep states were available at all.

The S0 state is enabled and causing problems. Go in UEFI firmware and disable it.

As far as your external drive goes, the only thing I can think of to try is In device manager, right click on your usb controller, select properties, power management tab, you would have to check "allow this device to turn off device to save power" but this will turn off power to all your usb ports and there is no guarantee power will be restored correctly when you wake the laptop.

But your problem is in Modern standby which is plagued with more problems than I can mention. Sleep issues, wake issues, battery drain, overheating, internet connection problems, just to name a few.
There have even been reports where these devices have gotten so hot as to catch fire when sitting on a desk with the lid closed or carried in a bag.

Your options are limited.

You can check to see if you are one of the few lucky ones who can enable S3 sleep.

Otherwise, I I strongly suggest using hibernate when closing the lid rather than S0 sleep. It's not ideal, but it's the best you can do if a device does not have S3 sleep available.

@Try3 has experimented more with S0 sleep than anyone else here.

That is not even an option in most modern laptop UEFI bios.

I never allow my devices to sleep, I either use hibernation or shutdown them.

I did accidently cut the top of result off. Sorry. It did state that only S0 was available.
From all the responses (thanks everyone) I think I will quit worrying about it and just use hibernation.
