Solved Windows 11 24H2 has un-bypassable hardware requirements...

intel 2nd gen i5 have SSE4.2. Even the pentium g2030 has it.
Ha, a mere youngster - only born in Q2 '13....
Even my 14 year old Intel Core i7 950 has SSE4.2, as does my 4 year old Intel Core i9 10900X.
So, I guess it's not gonna bother too many people.
What's with all these i-numbers? Them's powerful CPUs

You may be surprised (well, I was, at least) just how humble a processor and how far back you can go and still find a '24H2-capable' CPU. The oldest I have in working machines (still in regular use) are a Pentium B950 (Q2 '11) and an AMD V120 (Q2 '10).

You could get one of these and then use the DELL 960 for... a doorstop? :-)

...is like 100X better than the DELL 960

Or one of these maybe...

Ha, ha... probably more like a 1000X faster than my Dell 960. ;-) But the amazing thing is that for the basic things that I use it for (email, browsing the internet, reading articles, youtube, videos, etc.) it works very, very well. I don't need Windows 11 on it any faster (only use about 10 %) or Linux Mint to be faster (gets about 90 % of usage). Now if I was into gaming or had other higher processing requirements it would be a different thing. But, I also know that 'nothing lasts forever," and when the day comes then I will put in my order in for a nice new one. But so far, this pc hasn't seen its EOL. :-)

Well sure, if you don't use it "hard", then just let it go. You don't really need 24H2.

Out of interest, I did a quick search for the release dates of your Intel Pentium B950, AMD V120 and my Intel Core i7 950.

Release Dates
  • Intel Pentium B950: June 13, 2011.
  • AMD V120: May 12, 2010.
  • Intel Core i7 950: June 02, 2009.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

You'll be pleased to know that your Xeon X5680 has SSE4.2 with the required PopCnt instruction and will be able to run 24H2. It's an unsupported processor for Windows 11 though, so you'd have to use a workaround to install it, or to upgrade from 23H2 to 24H2.

Instruction Set Extensions - Intel® SSE4.2

Will be curious to know what said 'workaround' will be. I upgraed from Win10 pro last year using a rufus created usb stick. Worked well and have been taking updates from within windows with success thus far. Fingers crossed. While my current rig is horrendously inefficient and power hungry, its still plenty fast for my use.

Well, up to Rufus is one way, there are plenty of other known workarounds for 23H2 as well. But I've been testing the install media for 24H2 (it's available in the Insider Dev Channel now) and looks like MS have blocked the known workarounds for the 24H2 install media.

So the easiest workaround I've found so far is to make a hybrid usb, part 23H2, part 24H2, then the known workarounds still work. You could probably use your Rufus usb as the basis for that, when the time comes.

You only need one or the other, depending on the make of the cpu. SSE4A is AMD's version, SSE4.2 is Intel's, both support the PopCnt instruction.

This beta channel pc which does 95% of my work is not yet on 24H2.
24H2 is only in the Dev and Canary channels at the moment. Both the Ryzen 7 5700G and the Athlon 3000G in your specs are supported CPU's for Win11, and have the required PopCnt instruction. They'll handle 24H2 when it arrives.

Is the setupprep.exe idea any good?
Microsoft has patched the 'product server' trick for TPM check bypass
setupprep.exe /product server
Hmm, I wanted to use the hybrid approach because that allowed me to do an in-place upgrade. There's a new look for 24H2 Setup for a clean install, it now look very similar to the in-place upgrade one. You can still 'repair my PC' to get to a command prompt though.....

Yes, that workaround does work for a clean install.
I've just tested it on my System Two with its Legacy/MBR and TPM1.2 (after swapping in a spare SSD, of course )

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Damn, i just checked my overclocked Q6600/8gb DDR2 system, it has no SSE4.2 and is running 11 Pro-23H2 superfine. But i am sure "they" will find a way sooner or later for this old CPUs to install 24H2
