Yep. The installer warns me that the hardware isn't supported but I click Acknowledge or whatever and it blissfully continues. It bluescreens after the second reboot.

By the way... My motherboard with the Intel Core i7 950 CPU is a GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7. I built it on November 03, 2010. It's still going strong and still very fast.

Since both motherboards are different revisions, they have different BIOS versions. Both are up to date with the latest available for their respective revisions though.

We must think alike.

I was an ASUS fan in the early days of computer building. But I had a few bad ones that died early, so I switched to GIGABYTE and never looked back. Many of my GIGABYTE computer builds are still running well over a decade later.

Make sure you create the USB flash drive in Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) MBR, not the default UEFI GPT mode.

1st gen should not be the issue. My System Two can run 24H2 on a 1st gen i5-520M.
In fact I have it dual-booting the latest Insider Canary and Dev builds too.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

Just install via dism /Apply-Image. This method will install windows 11 on almost anything. I've no problem with running latest version of Windows on a 12 year old laptop with a definitely not supported CPU. Eventually though once the OS starts using instructons from the CPU that yours doesn't have - then expect crashes etc -- but currently once you've actually got W11 to install it seems quite tolerant in that regard.

Don't try to use dism or hybrid 23H2/24H2 USB flash drive to force 24H2 in systems without SSE4.2. Yes, you will manage to install 24H2 but it will never boot! At first restart (after having copied all data to disk and restarts to install 24H2) it will get stuck at the blue Windows logo without the spinning curves. That's it. You cannot recover from that. All you can do is format and install a compatible version such as Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 23H2. Been there done that.

Nothing to worry about, anything that has SSE4.2 will also have PopCnt.

When MS first raised the CPU requirement in February 2024 with Insider build 26052 the initial requirement was just for the POPCNT instruction, which first appeared with SSE4a. The minimum requirement was very soon raised to the full SSE4.2 instruction set though.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven below to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

When MS first raised the CPU requirement in February 2024 with Insider build 26052 the initial requirement was just for the POPCNT instruction, which first appeared with SSE4a. The minimum requirement was very soon raised to the full SSE4.2 instruction set though.

SSE4.2 and POPCNT are regarded as separate features. But both appear on the same time on most CPU models.

The 520M is apparently also westmere (like my W3690 that works). The i7-950 is slightly earlier Bloomfield.

No overclocking here. I stopped doing that after the Celeron 300A -> 450Mhz hack.

I took Rufus' defaults, I didn't see an option to override legacy MBR vs UEFI GPT mode. The USB stick has no problem booting though, and these systems certainly don't support UEFI.

In latest Rufus versions the option to create a Legacy (MBR) USB flash drive is not obvious. You must first press a key combination to enable it. I don't remember which, see the documentation.

PS: I found it, it's ALT+A.

If the partition table was wrong / unsupported, theoretically I'd not be able to boot into the installer from USB at all right?

Not in front of the right computer at the moment, but I tried Alt-A and it said "Use Rufus MBR disabled" and said "enabled" when I hit it agian, so presumably using MBR is the default for Rufus, at least when creating media on an old computer.

Why would you want to install to MBR? If the boot disk is currently MBR you can easily convert it to GPT.

One of my computers started with with Windows 7 back in 2013. The drives were all partitioned with MBR.
Last December the computer stopped booting so I replaced it with different motherboard and CPU.
In the next few months I am going to replace the CPU with one compatible with Windows 11. I will then upgrade to Windows 11.

I converted the first disk Disk0 from MBR to GPT

Using Windows PowerShell (Admin)

MBR2GPT /validate /allowFullOS /disk:0 MBR2GPT /convert /allowFullOS /disk:0

Important: I backed up Disk0 before I started in case there was a problem.

The clean install of Windows 11 made the SSD drive GPT and it was still (sorta) able to boot. Surely that's not the reason for the IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bluescreen though right? I would think it would blow up long before then.

The USB install made by Rufus is also GPT and seems to work fine? Somehow this old system still manages to find a way to boot off GPT...

It also says "These combinations are not supported on Windows, though". Now I'm confused.
