Windows 11 and Sleep

Hi folks

My new build PC has been up and running since Christmas 25 and has been working great. The W11 install used the clean install tutorial (thanks as always @Brink) and I dont have a Microsoft account (local user).

In my power settings my monitors and PC are set to sleep at 15 mins of inactivity.

Up until recently, this has been working perfectly. However I noticed a few updates from Microsoft in the last month and I've noticed an issue with sleep since one of them.

Right now, if i go to Start>Power>Sleep the PC will go to sleep pretty much straight away and the monitors with it. Hitting the keyboard/mouse button wakes it up just fine.
However if I wait 15 mins, only the monitors go to sleep and the PC continues running (fans on, RGB on, water-cooling pump on). I've changed the timings to 1 min to reproduce and it still occurs.

Im on Balanced power (im sure i read on this forum thats the correct thing for a PC).

The PC is new and fairly high end. Latest drivers for everything (but last time I updated all the drivers was about April.

Having both set for the same sleep pattern? Have you tried Monitors 15min, PC 20min?

But yes, many annoyances (as per usual) re updates.

I've noticed that new S0 modern standby is finicky as all get out. My machine wouldn't wake up from sleep after updating the video drivers. Went back to the factory video drivers and sticking with those on the new machine.

For a short spell, I had issues with my video waking up from sleep at times, it was quite intermittent. I updated the video drivers and of course several Windows updates came by as well. I haven't seen the sleep issue for a few weeks now, so apparently one of the other updates must have cured it.

Yes. Both the monitors and the PC are set to 15 mins.

My issue is that inactivity is only putting the monitors to sleep after 15 and not the PC too. So PC remains 'awake'

Yet I can put it into sleep mode manually with no issue.

What can I check to fix this?

See if you can disable modern standby or if it even enabled.

My point was that it makes zero sense to have both set for the same time period. You don’t need to put your monitors to sleep if your PC is asleep.

Not sure if a fix though.

Other thing to try
Check for bios update.
If you have any usb devices other than KB and mouse plugged in, unplug them and test.
Turn off fast boot.
Turn off hibernation.

the command line "powercfg /?" will list options to that command that may help you diagnose the issue, such as "powercfg /sleepstudy". Just run it in a terminal or command window.

Ive run the powercfg /requests in cmd and it returned 'none' for everything.

My issue is the PC wont automaticall sleep, not that it is waking unexpectedly from sleep, so I didnt pursue the 'find wake source' tutorial.

Hibernate has (and is) always been set to 'never' and Power is balanced.

I assume type C devices count? There are some USB items I cannot unplug however:

USB devices:
Gaming controller (wireless usb dongle) - i can unplug this
Shure Microphone - i can unplug this
Keyboard and Mouse are both type c connections - i can unpolug these
Monitor (connected to PC via usb for purposes of KVM switch) - i can unplug this

Watercooling pump - cant unplug this
Lian Li Fan wireless controller - cant unplug this

I asked both the almighty Co-pilot and Chatgpt and gotta admit the answers were really thorough and on-point. Use either one (or both) and input this
PC with modern standby will not automatically sleep. Manual sleep works.

I actually tried that yesterday, the only sleep state available on my machine is (S3). That happens to be what I use as I wanted the machine to really power down, but I didn't want to wait around for what seems to be almost a complete boot for hibernate. I did disable hibernate, so it's no surprise those states aren't available. It takes my system around 7-8 seconds to wake up from (S3) sleep. (S3) sleep looks to consume around 18W on my machine according to the UPS, that includes the two sleeping monitors.

My system only has S3 and Hibernate. I disabled Hibernate since it takes almost as long to wake up as simply rebooting, and I don't typically leave stuff open when I'm shutting down. I like S3 sleep, I have a UPS on the system, and the system wakes up very quickly.
