That's unusual.

I've never had a problem extracting .zip files using Windows Explorer in Win11.

I suppose that your Win11 installation is corrupt.

First thing I'd try: open a command windows (cmd) as administrator, and run sfc /scannow. (That's the System File Checker.)

If that doesn't help, maybe a repair install of Windows: Repair Install Windows 11 with an In-place Upgrade

Before the repair install, I strongly recommend imaging the boot drive. I haven't used it, but Macrium Reflect Free is popular. Reflect Free Edition

Hi,
Nothing new about 10 or 11 now blocking folders or files especially zipped
Right click and go to properties
Check the Unblock box apply and okay.

Right click and select extract all.

Ok, I am running into a similar problem. I can't even click or right click on the zip file, File Explorer just quits and disappears. So I can't unzip a file through File Explorer.

Welcome to Eleven Forum.

That shouldn't happen and suggests something in your W11 install is corrupt. The same suggestion as bobkn gave to the OP applies, first run sfc /scannow in a Command Prompt (Admin).

If that finds problems it cannot fix, then run Dism's RestoreHealth option, then run sfc /scannow again.

If you still have a problem after that then try an in-place repair upgrade.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

unsupported machine: Legacy bios, MBR, TPM 1.2, upgraded from W10 to W11 using W10/W11 hybrid install media workaround. In-place upgrade to 22H2 using ISO and a workaround. Feature Update to 23H2 by manually installing the Enablement Package.

Ok, ran the scan, no issues found. Ran the in-place upgrade. No difference, File Explorer still shuts down if I click on a zip file. What's next?

Update - I discovered the issue with zip files. I had a 3rd party File Explorer replacement utility called PowerDesk installed which evidently is not compatible with Windows 11. So I had to revert back to Windows File Explorer, but I didn't remove PowerDesk (hoping an update will be available soon for Windows 11). Once I uninstalled PowerDesk then File Explorer works with zip files.
