Solved Windows 11 Home has changed the start menu without permission how do i revert it ?

I'll add...some confusion. Yesterday I got the new Start menu, my first look of it was with Pinned items on top and the menu below listing apps alphabetically. I left it like that as it was the closest to the old Start menu. I rebooted a few times during the day and the new Start menu was always there. But today after cold starting the computer, the new Start menu was gone and was replaced by the old one. Does anyone know of an explanation for this happening? I prefer the old menu and now I know I can live with the new one but I would like to know if possible why the new Start menu went away without me doing anything to get rid of it. :-)

I've been using Start11 for quite awhile. I'm lucky in that I got the lifetime license for $5. It is now up to $20 for a perpetual license for 5 machines or $10 for single user license.

So lifetime went from $5 to $20?
Wasn't it subscription-only not too long ago?

A few months ago, I remoted into a customer's computer for support and saw that her Start Menu had changed from two pages (Pinned Apps and All) to one page with the Pinned Apps at the top and the All section at the bottom. I thought she had clicked something (notorious for that) but could not find where that setting was. She was updated to 25H2 and at that time it was a mystery to me. She wouldn't have known the difference either way so I fixed her issue and we disconnected.

I immediately researched it and learned that this menu change would be coming to all 25H2 versions. Mine still had the old menu and then one day the new menu arrived.

So I roll with it. After they took away the more customizable nature of the Window 10 start menu, I've learned to go with things like this. With all my Windows 11 setups - mine or my customers, I pin the 3 or 4 most used shortcuts to the Taskbar, pin 4 rows of pinned apps in the Start Menu, and set the bottom on "List".

As long as what I use is on one page, It's not important enough to risk 3rd-party menu-changer programs that monkey with the registry.

I use this laptop mainly from my recliner. It's purpose is scheduling computer and TV services, closing TV work orders, remote customer support, research and recreation.

Printers in the office room on my main floor were both acquired from business customers who upgraded equipment, had me handle the upgrade and then haul away the replaced hardware. I have not purchased a printer for myself in 15 years.

Main: HP LaserJet P3010 (black & white, hardwired, networked)
Aux: HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw (color laser, fax, hardwired, networked)

Internet in my house is routed through a TP-Link AC3200 with radios disabled. Wireless access points are two (2) strategically-located UniFi UAP-AC-PRO ceiling units which cover my whole house including basement and front/back yards. Netgear gigabit switches and CAT6 cabling are used for wired purposes.

This computer was acquired from a customer who cleaned out her office. I upgraded it and now use it in my downstairs computer-repair office.

My home office printer is an old HP LaserJet 3015. I acquired this after a customer passed away and his wife sold their house and downsized. She gave me all his equipment. I still help her with her tech issues.

I can live with that. It removes the "recommended" section which I don't like

I read the new version was wider but it looks the same to me (6 icons across)

The only thing it lack is USB-3.2 on the front face but it has 3.0 on the back
Mine is 12 now instead of 18 like above me

So i don't use much to have 4 complete rows to know if mine would be the same as above me

All depends on your screen resolution and scaling percentage if you get the large 8 column or small 6 column menu.

Yes - my 6-column, 4-row is on a 14" laptop at 1920x1080 @ 150% scale. Last night, I set up a customer's 24" All-In-One and hers was 8 columns. I'm delivering it today. When I pin shortcuts and customize new setups, I give them about 3 rows of stuff I think they might want and also include instructions to change the Start Menu on a page I leave with them.

Mine is a simple laptop so all of them the start menus feel huge on my 14 inch laptop. Is Start11 or OpenShell smaller ?

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Had no idea . . . it's the same 6 columns on my two PC's with 27" and 38" monitors the 38" is 2560 x 1440 and the 27" is 1920 x 1080
I have one 4k machine with 225% scaling and the large 8 Column menu. If I increase the scaling to the 250% scaling it goes to the small 6 column menu lol. My machine with a 2560x1600 res and 150% recommended scaling also has the large 8 column menu. Now my little Surface 7 laptop on the other hand with the recommended 150% scaling and a 2304x1536 res has the small 6 column menu. I have found that by playing with the scaling on some machines you can get the menu size to change but then the text may be to large or small for your taste and you then need to go into the accessibility settings and play with the text scaling as will. Probably not worth the hassle and better to just leave it at the default menu size that Windows decides on.

I never use the startmenu. I keep shortcuts for what I need on the desktop or the taskbar. I don't care what the startmenu looks like.

My machine use 1920 x 1200 while still finding what fits in a far left side. If it had something slim like xp or vista

I'm the opposite, no desktop icons, the most common items on the taskbar and the other regular items pinned on the start menu. I only search from the start menu as well.

Mine is a simple laptop so all of them the start menus feel huge on my 14 inch laptop.

That's my situation. A big huge thing.

Is Start11 or OpenShell smaller ?

I'm not sure about that. That's why I asked about pricing in post #25.

Maybe so I can also compare it in a preview beforehand, and see how it looks and whether I can shrink it more comfortably to my 14" size.
