Hello Windows Insiders!

Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update, Windows 11, version 26H2 (Build 26300.9278), available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.

Windows 11, version 26H2 will be delivered as an enablement package (eKB). This means that Windows 11, versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 use a shared servicing branch. It also means that they share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts. As a result, many of the features and improvements available in Windows 11, version 26H2 might already be familiar, as they have been gradually introduced through monthly updates.

To use the correct enablement package based on your currently installed build:

KB5122776 is the enablement package for the Insider Experimental Preview Build 26340. In the installed updates list, it shows up as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 Insider Refresh - KB5122776 - 2026.08 A - BuildNumber Update.”

KB5121794 is the enablement package for the retail 26H2 release, listed as “Feature Enablement for Windows (Ge) 26H2 - KB5121794 - 2026.07 D.”

For commercial customers, Windows 11, version 26H2 enables several experiences that were introduced in earlier releases but not previously enabled by default for commercial devices. This includes Windows settings backup, app-specific actions from the taskbar, and some File Explorer enhancements. For guidance on how to prepare for Windows 11, version 26H2 in your organization, see Get ready for Windows 11, version 26H2.

Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install Windows 11, version 26H2 via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means if you are an Insider currently in the Release Preview Channel on a PC that meets the Windows 11 hardware requirements, you can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 26H2. Once you update your PC to Windows 11, version 26H2, you will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). If you are a commercial customer enrolled in the Windows Insider Program for Business, you can deploy and begin validating Windows 11, version 26H2 on PCs in your organization using Windows Update client policies and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Azure Marketplace will be available later today. Should any issues arise, IT admins in organizations deploying Release Preview updates can request Microsoft Support.

Then, you're on the wrong thread. Your build 26340.9233 is on the 26H2 Experimental channel. This one is for the R.P. channel 26H2 26300.9278. Okay, thank you! Can I stay with the build I'm on? That's my concern. I'm trying to avoid having to reinstall everything because I'm doing something that is over my head. I was very curious about the promises to fix Windows, so I opted in for advanced performance and other improvements earlier. But now, as an insider, I'm confused about how the build here lives and progresses, while some fail. I already had to reinstall everything once, and it took half a day. I truly love the build I'm on now; I'm hoping that if I do nothing for the most part, it will eventually just keep going and functioning as it is.

Ok... in my case here's what happened.
1 I ran this step and then I ran the update from the windows update .... when I ran this it took me to .9223 then when I rant the update from the windows update I went to .9278. I made sure I was in the RP channel and that's how I got the the current build version.. Lesson... read the instruction...

You pretty much summed it up already, you enrolled in the formally Dev now experimentel channel. While it will get new features earlier they often still have bugs to work out but as long as you understand and can except that you might as well stay put there if you don't want to do another clean install to get back to the more stable public build. As long as that's not your business computer you need to depend on for stability you may be perfectly happy there. Try it out for a while and see if it works for you. I use the Beta and Release Preview builds myself.

Go to the Windows Update section, make sure you're in the RP channel and get the updates. You should get the update to .9278. I had the same thing happen and when I did those steps I 'fixed' the issue

We were just trying to point out at the time you weren't on the correct new RP build with that first build you posted but it seems you eventually got there.

I was in the process of getting there and I posted the mid way result. After a minute I knew that the update would get me to .9278.. and I was correct

I suspect I'm not the only one who's going to run into this issue... Thanks for the advice

You pretty much summed it up already, you enrolled in the formerly Dev now experimental channel. While it will get new features earlier they often still have bugs to work out but as long as you understand and can except that you might as well stay put there if you don't want to do another clean install to get back to the more stable public build. As long as that's not your business computer you need to depend on for stability you may be perfectly happy there. Try it out for a while and see if it works for you. I use the Beta and Release Preview builds myself.

Awesome to hear! No, this is not on my work laptop. Just on a very old HP laptop I'm stopping using bc of the one I use for work, today. The Lenovo has Windows 11 as well, but I didn't join anything on it. I'm pretty sure it's all default settings, and it only has security updates, once a month, an update and a reboot, and it's pretty stable.

So your your old machine sounds perfect to use for a Windows insider test machine to experiment with new features. You can use it for fun just to try out the latest experimental features and give feedback on them if you want.

I was able to enable all features except the Modern Run dialog. I guess that one is Experimental-only at this point.

I have the new run dialog on both my beta machines but the coding still isn't there in the RP or public builds yet so vivetool can't enable it. Hopefully not to much longer though.
