windows 10
Hey guys. Need a hand. Looking to upgrade to windows 11. Issue I'm facing is that my boot drive can't enable secure boot. Everytime I disable CSM and reboot, it boots back into bios. My drive is configured in MBR and I need to convert it to GPT. I'm looking to do a fresh install but how do I safety backup my data on my boot drive and then reconfigure my boot drive to GPT and then transfer everything back?
cheers
James

Welcome, James.

Use Rufus to create the install media.

If you use RUFUS to create your install media, you can stipulate a username and local account, disable Bitlocker, bypass TPM & Secure Boot (Top Choice) etc.

Create the install media with RUFUS.
    • #1 Direct RUFUS to your USB
    • #2 Direct RUFUS to the ISO
    • #3 should sort itself out

  • When instigating the creation of the media and clicking “Start”
  • The following options will show. Select your choices.
    • Uncheck what youn don't want, check what you do.

  • Click OK then the USB install media will be created on the USB
  • Proceed to install Windows.

Ok sorry, James. i neglected a part of your question.

I and others have successfully converted to GPT without issue, but it’s best to back up as you mentioned.
I use Hasleo, if you want to give it a go, here is something that may help you.

Just to mention, when creating the install media with Rufus for a clean install, you can select (it should be automatically selected) a GPT install. As far as I know, you shouldn’t have to manually convert the boot drive
Number 3 in the Rufus image above.

Aren't we putting the cart before the horse? You want to restore data, but haven't mentioned how you intend to back it up in the first place. You have to choose some method.
