Yeah. It's a real shame a copy of those tutorials aren't included with every new computer sold so the buyer would at least have a clue when he discovers his data isn't where he thinks it is..

I don't know whether it ever did ask for permission ... ? Although it appears that it might be a little bit more "aggressive" in implementing itself. Just another reason to leave the internet disconnected during installation and setup, until the user can manually take control.

Unfortunately it's only the informed that are aware of it, the unsuspecting inexperienced user opening up the box is gonna fall well and truly into the unfettered clutches of the Microsoft despot

Exactly. I always disconnect after the install checks for updates before windows loads

That's not the same thing to me. I get asked by google when adding a contact if I want it to sync all of them or just add it a regular contact. Google does not charge me for syncing my info except photos.

Onedrive is very insidious because it only has 5GB of storage for all data which microsoft knows isn't enough for most people, so when you run out of space you get prompted to buy more space even though your hard drive has plenty. And then if you don't pay, you have some files stuck in C:\users\Andrew\onedrive and some in just the regular documents folder. Which confuses users because most people dont understand the file explorer in the first place.

Absolutely no comparison whatsoever. Totally utterly different in the way they work, and Google has a little bit more respect for the user's wishes than OneDrive has.

I do - and have done for quite some years without inconvenience. I keep my own contacts lists (vcf format, transformed to txt as well) and use "backup to computer" for all else (Droid14 option offered by Xiaomi, Huawei etc). The one exception is WhatsApp which is best conveniently backed up to a gmail account for retrieval if/when necessary.

Gotta love the hall monitors on these geek sites, as completely useful as the sites really are in all sorts of ways.

Be careful how you use this. I just enabled backup of the Desktop to OneDrive then disabled it which removed most of the stuff on my desktop. I had to recover from my last Reflect backup. I usually just define what files to synch on OneDrive via OneDrive / Settings / Account / Choose Folders
