Windows 11 Start Menu missing some icons and text

Hi there, I just recently upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 build 26100.6725 and for some reason some of the icons and text are missing on the start menu only. Restarted file explorer, reset the start menu, reset the icon cache, nothing working. Anyone have a fix? Thanks!

If this isn’t Windhawk, this may be due to the recent Cumulative Preview Update KB5065789 (Sep 29th)

Toggle light/dark mode
  • Open Settings: Press Win+I.
  • Go to Colors: Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  • Switch theme: Change “Choose your mode” from Light to Dark (or Dark to Light).
  • Force a redraw: Toggle “Transparency effects” Off, then On.
  • Close Start (Esc), reopen, and check if icons/text return.

Change display scaling
  • Open Display settings: Settings > System > Display.
  • Adjust Scale temporarily: Change Scale (e.g., 100% > 125% or 150%).
  • Switch back to your preferred scale.
  • Refresh. Sign out and back in if there’s no change.
  • Open Start and check if icons/text are present.


If that doesn’t work, can you uninstall the update?

i havent seen a built in side by side start menu... but i could definitely be mistaken...
i thought the new start menu changed grouping, etc.

I should point out this only happens when I try to search something. The normal start menu is fine. I tried the DISM and that didn't work either. Nor did the toggling dark/light or changing the display scaling. I will try to sign out and sign in and roll back the update and report back.

Preview updates are fine if they work, but they’re not mandatory.
IF it’s the update, removing it could possible help.

Update: tried all the above options and none of them worked, so I uninstalled the update preview and that was the only thing that worked.
