Windows Defender / Microsoft Defender ? Protection ?

I thought this PC was being protected by Windows Defender.

It is set up with a Local Account, rather than being used with a Microsoft Account. That is the way it has been set up by someone else. It is a PC I am partly responsbible for trying to maintain (although I am still only a novice).

I think to use Microsoft Defender, that requires being signed-in with an account (and which requires a subscription) ? Something which the owner would not be prepared to do.

Is this PC being protected by a firewall and anti-virus, or not ?

Nope, you don't need to sign in with a Microsoft account to use Defender, nor do you need any subscription.

Settings>Privacy & Security>Windows Security
You can then select "Open Windows Security" to see the dashboard

Is Microsoft Defender different from Windows Defender; are they separate ? What is the distinction, if any ? (confused)

I can see Microsoft Defender on the start menu, although when I click on it, it tells me I have to sign in.

They’re the same. They started calling it Microsoft Defender when they made it available for non-Windows devices.

To activate Microsoft Defender I believe you need to log on to your Microsoft Account. It's still free though.

So, even if the user does not sign in with a MS account, the PC would still be protected anyway ?

Yup, by Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which is housed within the Windows Security app. It provides real-time protection against malware, viruses, and threats, and it is active by default.

As for the way it is set up, i.e. Local account, not an MS account; no, I don't understand it (but there's a lot I don't understand about PCs).

Microsoft says Defender is enough for most Windows 11 users. This means more or less technically educated users, but not the old parents or careless children, who may need additional protection.

You don't need extra antivirus on Windows 11, Microsoft officially says

True that no amount of protection will prevent users from clicking on links on websites and in emails or downloading sketchy softwarez.
Basic internet security should be taught starting in grade school.

To help clarify terms [because Microsoft's Department of Obfuscation have re-used the name Defender within Office/Microsoft 365]:-

- What we used to call Windows Defender (then, for a while, Microsoft Defender Security Center) is now called Microsoft Defender AntiVirus within Windows Security and it remains built-in to Windows.
- Microsoft Defender is an additional security app that forms part of Office365 i.e. within an MSAccount-related subscription product. It is separately activated by the act of signing into it.

Installing Microsoft Defender - MSSupport
- Windows Defender Firewall remains built-in to Windows.

I agree with the others that no additional or alternative malware protection is required unless you positively identify some feature of a third-party security product that is of benefit to the way you use your computer [such as a VPN].
- I haven't bothered with third-party security products for a decade.
- I spent a month using each of the common ones [Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, ...] to see if they were worthwhile but I found no benefits so I returned to what is now called Microsoft Defender AntiVirus within Windows Security.
- If you are considering third-party security products then do review the test results in AVTest [Windows] results - February 2026 and click on each entry in their results table to see the detailed 'Protection' results [which reveal that none is any better than Microsoft Defender AntiVirus within Windows Security.
