Windows detects camera but software does not

I want to use some Canon camera software with Windows 11 but it won’t work. However it always worked on Windows 10.

After the camera is connectted to the PC via USB and turned on, the software supposed to automatically launch. It lets you download all or just new photos. But that does not t happen with Windows 11.

I can manually go into different sections of the program & click on an .exe file.
MyCamera.exe says “A supported device cannot be found.”
CameraLauncher.exe says “Cannot detect camera.”

However Control Panel > Device Manager shows it as a Portable Device/MTP USB Device. Right clicking on that & “Scan for hardware changes” changes the description to the actual model of the camera.

If I go into Windows > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, the camera is listed under Other devices as Canon Digital Camera, and after about 30 seconds it changes to the actual camera model .

Windows 11 knows the camera is connected but the software won’t recognize it.

I’ve done the Uninstall device > Scan for hardware changes but that didn’t work.

Any suggestions on how to get this working?

You need to install the Canon EOS Utilities (at least for EOS cameras).
I had a Canon EOS Rebel T4i. The only software I needed was the EOS Utilities.

What's the make/model of the camera?

PowerShot ELPH 100HS

It's at least 10 years old. It's small & I use it instead of a smartphone.

It looks like you want CameraWindow DC, found under Software/Drivers, here...

The software at the link you mentioned is what I initially tried but did not work. Above where it shows PoweerShot ELPH 100HS it states "PowerShot ELPH 100 HS has been retired. Product support is no longer available. Driver and content updates are not being made."

Then I used the CameraWindow DC 8 that was on the disc that came with camera. The same software that worked with Windows 10. It installs on Windows 11 but does not detect the camera.

I did look at the Canon community support site. Most comments said the software is not supported anymore & to use an SD card reader. Which is what I did this last time.

I like CameraWindow because it's convenient & would like to get it working.

I'll give Canon a call. Maybe there's a software version half way between mine & the latest that might work.

I don't know what kind of caswe you have... but if you have a 5.25" bay you can get one of these...

I have an empty 5.25" bay which is made for an optical drive because it has push button & flip down door.

There is a 3.5" bay which I already filled with an adapter which has a pair of USB3 ports. I could replace it with an adapter with USB3 & an SD card reader such as this.

I notice that software is for Windows 10. There doesn't seem to be any Win 11 software..
I would guess that you'll either need an SD card reader, or a newer camera that's still supported.


And yeah, that 3.5" bay SD card reader looks like s good idea. ^^

More than you want to know -

I called Canon & the rep I spoke with was not familiar with CameraWindow software. He said there was no connection software for my camera that works with Windows 11.

He said the new cameras work with Windows 11. So I looked at the manual for the newest PowerShot ELPH & it says you can connect to a computer with a USB cable & “Use built-in features of the operating system to save images”. However I wanted to use the features of the Canon software.

The manual also says the camera can send images to smartphones & tablet computers that have WiFi functions. But you have to download & install the “Camera Connect” software from the App Store or Google Play.

The rep also mentioned an “Image Transfer Utility”. My searching turned up only “Image Transfer Utility 2” which appears to be WiFi software that only works with certain cameras.

Guess I’ll be using the SD card reader.
