Hi.

What are essentials for Windows?

I always install these after installation:
- C++ 2015-2022 redistributable
- DirectX 9.0 June 2010 redistributable

What other essentials do you recommend installing before everything else? .net?
Isn't it better to integrate installers to iso file with NTLite? Is there any way to install them silently? /s or /S switch?

I don't mean third party apps. I want to know which runtime libraries are really essential for installing apps. for example, in our software development team we use Java and so we have integrated JDK to the installer. (Simulia suite)
but some developers do not add those runtimes and installers/apps won't work.
as I want to create a public windows.iso which is easy to install, I want to add those runtime libraries into it but I can't decide which are really necessary.
for example, which versions of .net should I add and are more common?

Any application that requires .net would normally come with it baked into it's own installer.

I have never done this before. So, do I just go to the link below and download the x86 and x64 Redistributable packages listed there and run the install program. That's it - and it won't harm my machine in any way?

Sorry to seem so uninformed, but like I said, I have never done this before. I guess mine have always just been updated during a regular windows update on their own. I do see that my last installation of these was on July 1, 2025, version 14.40.33810. What about those other two 2008 Redistributable?

Or do you think it would be safer for me, (lol...) to just let windows update do it on their normal schedule? I would hate to mess things up by pushing this when there really may not be a real need to do so, just asking.

In an ideal world, you could install all versions of the VC++ and .NET run-times in parallel. But not everyone wants that, or has the disk space because it begins to add up. A normal W10/11 baseline is to expect VC++ 2015-2022, .NET 4.8 (or 4.8.1) and 5.

If you have legacy apps, you may need older VC++ versions for backwards compatibility. Some apps may jump ahead to newer .NET frameworks.

To split the difference you should install VC++ 2022 and .NET 5 from Windows post-setup, and provide copies of the other versions on the ISO in a separate folder if the user finds a need for them.

Thank you so much. So, to make sure I understand correctly - are you saying to run those commands "after a windows update, is that what you mean by post setup? Or, when you say "post setup" do you mean after a new installation of windows? My installation of Windows is about eight weeks old now and I do have those programs already on my machine - just not the most recent version. Sorry, I may not be all that knowable as most others here.

Either way, I should-not download and install those programs from that Microsoft site, right??

I looked at all the versions of VC++ and NET runtimes offered and decided that I'd get them if I needed them. Let's not forget the VB runtimes as well, there are still applications using those.

If you build a customized Windows ISO, it's possible to include different setup installers that automatically install as part of the process. It's intended to speed things up if you need a clean install.

For everyone else with an existing Windows system, you can just download the same installers from MS and run them yourself by hand.

an easy explanation:
post-setup : when you install windows, before OOBE you can install some apps and run some commands
