Solved Windows File Recovery

Whilst I was cleaning out my D Drive to another drive I noticed that a folder "LORNA" had vanished. I never removed it but thought I may have double linked and dragged it somewhere, nope, cant find it. I downloaded Windows File Recovery from Store and it ran in DoS. Every instruction I give it, according to the above instructions. I get a parse error. One I tried something and it worked but it wanted to move C to D or something, so I binned that. The folder is important as it contains loads of her Vet work. All I want is that one folder back. I tried a undelete software contained in a larger item, I had but it keeps saying I need to buy Pro ver to undelete found files, I am already on Pro ver.

If I restore backup (3 days ago) will it remove all my hard work of the past 48 hrs?

FIRST, back up your hard work of the past 48 hours. DO IT.

Then restore the three-day-old backup, and you should be good to go.

(I'm assuming that LORNA is still in your three-day-old backup.)

Might consider doing an image a little more frequently than every three days.

I know you know this, but I want to just remind you that your backup of the hard work of the past 48 hours MUST be on a drive OTHER THAN the drive you're going to restore. Duh. Yes, I know you know. :clap:

yes my friend, Its going on the O Drive external which I am now saving for backups only. I will try to switch to a 2 day backup soonest. I am about 50+% into rhis backup now.

Because it has been "deprecated" (whatever that means) by Microsoft for some tine now. You'd be much better off using Macrium Reflect Free or one of the alternatives. Win B&R (7) is no longer reliable. But let's hope it works for you today, if that's what you're using. :crossed

Actually the reason goes back further to Windows 8. MS introduced File History Backup and wanted to drop the image backup tool - however they kept it and renamed it Backup and Restore (Win 7) to differentiate it from File History Backup and was accessed from a rather obscure at the bottom of a screen rather than a shiny button.

When Windows 10 came out they still retained the tool and surprisingly made it more obvious. However, eventually it was classified a deprecated feature.

The name is absurd as it implies it only works with Windows 7 backups LOL.

Free: I am going to find that and save it in my vids, for future use. Why? Let me tell you how the genius in me solved the condundrum. Well, I could, but I would be a liar.
I had been on this problem since approx 1100 hrs today. I went into my daughters desktop and saw the old link to her folder. I looked at properties and I nearly fainted - it was pointing to N External file not D. I checked, but ther was no N because the damn USB connection had fallen out! THERE on the N drive was her folder!! I assumed D because I was working on it and she said 'wheres my folder' - the rest was an assumption.

This damn dork never thought that the simplest solution was the answer. So I grabbed a rum and coke and went to have a lie down. Warra bloody idiot!

Sincere thanks to those who 'tried' to help me out, I feel such a *cough*

Lifecycle Terms and Definitions - Microsoft Lifecycle

Deprecation is the state of a feature, functionality, or service that is no longer in active development. A deprecated feature may be retired and removed from future releases. Deprecated services may be retired in the future.

1. Microsoft does not explicitly state that "No longer in active development" means it will not fix security issues or that it no longer supports the feature.

2. Microsoft does not explicitly state that "Deprecated" means less secure or less usable.

3. "may be retired" means that it might, or it might not be removed from Windows editions in the future.

4. The manner in which Microsoft decides to remove "deprecated" features is largely dependent upon on-going use by enterprise users.

5. How much of a mess removing feature code from Windows images is also a primary consideration whether or not Microsoft will literally "remove" the feature; it just might leave the code there and deactivate the feature by default.

6. Microsoft "deprecated" bitsadmin.exe 20 years ago and then Microsoft reversed the decision years later. Bitsadmin is still shipped with Windows. Just a single example.

Just to clarify my comments, though, it isn’t that I don’t know what the word means, it’s just that Microsoft’s use of it is so full of mays, mights, and hedges that you can’t be sure what they mean by it.

It’s also the case here that looking through the posts in the backup forums for 11 and 10, you’ll find so many negative comments about the reliability of BU&R(7) that you’ll probably conclude it’s not a dependable tool at all.

I understand what you're saying. I actually copied my previous post from another user on the web who I believe is a developer, which I found sums it up pretty well. I myself use both Aomei Backupper and Windows built-in as a fail-safe method. I find the latter works fine on W11. My guess is that one reason you find so many posts to the contrary is folks tweaking their system, and there may be other reasons.
