Windows freezing gradually after wake up

Hi. I was reading a post from 2023 here regarding much the same thing as the title and I still can't find a solution to this problem.

I'm fairly new to Windows 11 but this problem started with Windows 10 about a month ago. Since then I've tried just about everything I read, including replacing the graphics card (and drivers of course). Event Viewer seems to come up with something different every time I address a problem and Reliability History much the same. The last "Ahaa" moment was with a Samsung app about 10 years old which I uninstalled, but nothing doing. Everything I've read seems to have various solutions but I'm at my wits end.

Fundamentally the PC wakes up normally after about an hour, but any longer and "bits" start to fail. Outlook seems to be the first (probably because that's my first "goto") followed but any apps that I click on some seconds later, followed by the mouse freezing and a hard reset. It often starts straight away but sometimes a few attempts are needed but it always attempts to start W11 and freezes just before completing. If it gets to recovery mode it always starts.

My sanity is in your hands..

please try in a command prompt as administrator
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

let that complete which may take some time, then in the same command terminal
sfc /scannow

again let that complete then restart the system and re-run
sfc /scannow


see if that can improve performance.

• Disable Fast Startup, just to test and see if there is a difference:
  • Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck "Turn on fast startup"

• If that fails and you see no changes after a reboot, turn OFF Hybrid Sleep if you have that option:
  • Control Panel > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings > Expand Sleep > Set Allow hybrid sleep to Off.
• Set Hibernate after to Never

  • In Advanced Power Settings, under USB settings, set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled

• You may also want to make sure the following drivers are up to date: (As you have only placed “ASUS ROG” in your system specs, I have no way of helping you there)
  • Intel Chipset driver — If same version, reinstall.
  • Intel Management Engine Interface
  • SATA/NVMe storage drivers

Thanks for the prompt reply. The problem I have at the moment is that I'm away from the PC for a week. Bear with me till I get back. However I've tried SFC, DCIM, changing sleep states (I'm using S3), tried hybernate on and off and updating all the drivers (ROG Strix 560G) but I'll try them again when I get home.

I would also check for overheating. Make sure you remove dust as good as possible from the case. I would also remove the side cover and use an air spray or even better, an air blower to remove dust from the tower especially from all the fans and ventilation holes. Next step, if you are confident enough, is to replace the thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink. You can ask a more experienced friend or a professional to do it for you. If your CPU cooler is not very effective you might also consider a replacement.

My own little adventure: Originally I had a 3rd generation Intel Core-i3 3220 3.3GHz CPU (socket 1155, see my 2nd system specs) and about a year ago I decided to upgrade. I didn't want to replace the motherboard plus CPU plus RAM, so I bought a second hand Intel Core-i7 3770 CPU which is the maximum (apart for a couple of Xeon models) my motherboard supports. However, the previous owner kept the Intel CPU cooler that came with the Core-i7, so I decided to use my old Core-i3 CPU cooler and replace later. The CPU temperature was a little higher, but nothing to worry about. This was until last Summer that we had some days with 40+ degrees Centigrade outside (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and the CPU reached the safety threshold of 105 degrees Centigrade (221 degrees Fahrenheit) and to protect itself slowed down to 1.6GHz! It was slower than an old Intel Celeron socket 478 CPU (the cheap alternative to Intel Pentium 4 s478)! I tried to remove all dust and replace the thermal paste, nothing changed as long as it operated at 105 degrees Centigrade! So I decided to replace the old Intel Core-i3 cooler with a much better third-party solution. Since then it doesn't surpasses 70 degrees Centigrade (158 degrees Centigrade).

So don't overlook overheating. Rule that out before trying anything else.

Hi all. I'm back from my trip away. Since I fired it up the PC seems to be behaving. Whether that's due to an update in my absence remains to be seen. I'll give it few days and get back.

I think I may have solved it. I use an app called Swann Security which oversees a block of cameras and a recorder. When the PC woke there seemed to be a lag for the app to fire up, so I very quickly shut it down before the PC froze. I've since deleted the app and all seems fine. I now need to find a way around that problem.

This is my last comment on the subject in that the problem wasn't Swann Security. After many hours tracing and replicating, I decided that the majority of comments in other forums pointed to a graphics driver issue. I took out the graphics card, the 10gig ethernet card and all the drivers, leaving no additional hardware which ruled out a hardware change. That only left the OS or the MB. I did a fresh install of Win 11 to rule out the OS which didn't help. So it was down to the MB or the nvMe drive. I noted that the HDD/SSD led would stop reading abruptly when the crash occurred, which was my next step. I created an image of the drive and copied it to a spare SATA SSD. Problem solved. So there we have it, a dying nvMe drive. Cheers...
