Solved Windows Mail app forcefully updated to Outlook app?!?!

Hey guys,

Anyone had their Mail app forcefully updated to the Outlook app?

I was under the impression mandatory migration would only happen on August 2024, and I most definitely have not clicked the annoyingly pervasive Try Outlook button.

Today I boot my PC and click the mail icon and instead I get the Outlook? Just wondered if anyone else has had this?

Hasn't changed yet on my Win11 Home Notebook but I've never set it up, did read somewhere it may take effect automatically early '24.

And the toggle to turn it back off is still there, just as described in our tutorial linked by Brink.

That's the thing though mate, it's still November, so I can't understand why now when I launch from the Mail shortcut I placed in my taskbar that it launches the Outlook app.

Anyone who may have read my posts about this app in this forum are probably aware of how much I detest this app. I know the ads are a contentious issue for many users, but that isn't even my main annoyance. It's the fact that I have to run it at boot every time and minimise instead of closing in order to receive email notifications.

Hell, I didn't even receive an email notification telling me you wonderful folks had replied, I literally had to launch the app.

Gone back to the Mail app now, which was simple enough. I'm just perplexed this switch happened despite the fact I haven't instigated it.

Probably a sneaky move on MS part to attempt me to use it again.

The reference to 2024 is when they are planning to deprecate the old Mail and Calendar app permanently.

Mail and Calendar retired at the end of year​

Microsoft began alerting consumers and enterprise customers that they are retiring the Windows Mail and Calendar apps in 2024, recommending they start testing the new Outlook app.

They need time to do that, and consumers and organizations and businesses need time to do that, so they have flipped the switch now (well, 2 months ago for early adopters, and now for everyone moving to 23H2), with a toggle on it to revert back if you really need to use Mail and Calendar, but that will eventually go away, too, probably after it is deprecated.

At the end of 2024 we will be ending support for the Mail and Calendar apps for Windows. The new Outlook for Windows helps people be more productive and in control of their inbox."

This new message also moves up the timeline, stating that Microsoft will start transitioning Mail and Calendar users to the new Outlook app in August 2023.
