If a picture is opened in WMP then it is shown as a slideshow. After a few seconds it will step on to the next picture in the WMP Library. Now if your WMP Library is not set up then there will be no 'next' picture to show, and it would be expected to close after the few seconds are up.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

" I really do not understand why one would need to open it in WMP "............well its shipped with Win11 , works very fine on 10 , so I thought it has to work , like in 10 , also ..........
FWIW, I set up WMP today, and can't open .jpg files either. Not that I'd want to use it for that. I just wanted to check to see if I could. I did tell it to open all kinds of pictures, but I could only see snippets.

There is virtually no difference in the two file formats (jpg and jpeg) except the naming convention. The file extension JPG was first used in windows because of the limitation of ms-dos and the fat 16 file limit on file names. It certainly could be another windows 11 bug since you are able to use the jpeg and other picture file types in WMP.
Here is a page on wikihow if you want to experiment with one of your jpg files to change it to jpeg to see if it would work in wmp then.
How to Convert Pictures To JPEG.
The last method uses gimp which is free. There is also an option in there to use paint. Although they are basically the same possibly changing them to jpeg may open them in wmp. I would only try one to see.

You don't have to convert a.jpg file to a .jpeg file. You just need to rename them.

No, probably not a Windows bug. Most likely it's a Windows Media Player bug. You cannot blame the operating system for issues with an app.

Okey Dokey! I just tried it and it seems I didn't do it right the first time. I dragged & dropped a .jpg file to where it instructed and it works for me.

This on an AMD system that's supposed to be buggy. And I take it back . . . looks like WMP isn't buggy either.
