Windows update message...

Windows 11, version 24h2...

This desktop had some issues with installing update and as of today, this is the message displayed:



The SFC /Scannow did not find any issues, while DISM did:


The command of Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth had not been issued as of yet, couple of questions...

It does not seem that both options would be required the resolve the issue at hand.

Dism should be able to repair the component store, will the "repair install" Windows disappear?

If it doesn't, can the system be just updated to W11, version 25H2 instead of running a "repair install" for the current version?

I suggest you do an in-place upgrade. Nothing will be deleted and nothing will be changed other than the OS

No it won't, you will have to do the 25H2 (repair version) update install due to errors in earlier updates around that time.

You should get clear DISM and SFC after that.

Post #2 is a more complicated way of doing the same thing.

DISM could be cleared as well, by running the command of "restorehealth".

Doing the 25H2 (repair version) update install is an option, just prefer not to update to 25H2 version at the current time.

Don't you have the Win 11 24h2 USB installation drive or iso to do the repair install?

Yes, I do have both, 24/25H2 ISOs and aware of that, either of them could do a repair install without loosing programs and files. I just haven't had time as of yet, maybe tomorrow I can run either of them. This system is imaged every nigh with Reflect, so, it would be easy to rollback, if something goes haywire...

Alternatively, just click on the "Reinstall Now" within Windows Update, that is in my first post. I've never seen this in any of my Windows and curious what it would do? Did anyone encounter this in Windows update?

I've been fine with Windows all along, including Windows 10, but W11 is still foreign to me. Well, not really, but never had a Windows that breaks the updates so frequently and now, it requires reinstalling itself too. That, I've never seen in any version of the Windows. Credit to Window 11, it is still working just fine, without any errors.

Repair with Windows Update was introduced in early 2024, so not new but also wasn't always there.

You are just complicating a simple update for no reason. As I said some people had these failed updates dates around October and is fixed by the 25H2 (repair version) update. That was 19 Nov for me. Makes no sense to delay it.

It is once in 30 years of Windows updates, that is not frequent.

You haven't been around for that long, have you?

I did not have much time to work on my machine, but finally got around to finish resolving the update error:

• Reinstall from within Windows Update failed. I sort of suspected, just had to try it
• Initial update to 25/H2 failed, unsupported hardware (TPM1.0)
• Subsequent update with modified 25H2 image installed without issue
• Both SFC and DISM completed without any errors

There was no urgency to resolve the update issue, since the system worked just fine otherwise. My intent had not been to "complicate a simple update", rather a learning experience about a broken Windows files and component. Keep in mind, that not long ego, my system still ran Windows 10 and yes, I still miss it...

Windows 11 24H2 version is supported until Oct 13, 2026 and normally, MS actually supports its software within its lifecycle. That does not seem to be the case with September/October updates that actually broke components. The only fix is to update to the 25H2, but not by choice by end users who'd want stay on 24H2. That's pretty much how one forces a new version by not fixing the the previous one....
