Windows Update says "Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date..."

Hi,

I was recently working on a Windows 11 Pro 22H2 machine and trying to run the Windows update check. Instead of being prompted to install 23H2 (then 24H2) which I have experienced on other desktops and laptops, I am getting the attached message.

"Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date. Your version of Windows has reached the end of service".

On this particular PC which is a HP Mini, I ran the HP support assistant and updated all the BIOS, firmware, drivers etc. (it passed Win 11 24H2 compatibility test). So, why don't these feature updates (23H2, 24H2) appear as normal Windows Updates, instead of having to run the Windows 11 installation assistant (which I did and successfully updated it) as if I am doing a full install/upgrade from Win 10.

To update to 23H2 all you need is the enablement package. From there update or maybe you will get prompted to update to 24H2

This is because Windows 22H2 is at end of life as of October last year. Hence that message.

You should also be able to run the in-place upgrade. You can use Media Creation Tool - Option Two but Option One may work.

Upgrading to 23H2 then 24H2 is like a stepping stone process. Unless you are successful with the in-place upgrade above, straight to 24H2.
To mention again, 23H2 wasn’t offered in Windows Update to my knowledge, it is the enablement package I posted above.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
No point to go to 23H2 first. Just manually download the Windows 11 24H2 ISO and run Setup from there to upgrade 22H2 directly to 24H2. I have done this, it is possible even on unsupported systems, just bypass compatibility check (see relevant thread).

Hi,

The point of my post is not to have to go through a complicated process to get past 22H2, but to understand why it is not available as part of the usual Windows update process as I have experienced on other computers for 23H3/24H2.

Upgrading to 23H2 then 24H2 is like a stepping stone process. Unless you are successful with the in-place upgrade above, straight to 24H2.
To mention again, 23H2 wasn’t offered in Windows Update to my knowledge, it is the enablement package I posted above.

I can tell you categorically, that only two weeks ago, I was checking a Windows 11 Pro computer for Windows updates. It offered the 23H2 feature update. I installed it, it took ages. After that, it offered the 24H2 update, I did that as well, same story.

using the enablement package took a minute, if I remember cirrectly. I am now unsure of what this post thread is for.

Asking why Microsoft has changed processes is like asking what the meaning of life is.

I also mentioned, in-place with a 24H2 ISO will be your best option.

Option one here will get you the latest ISO
Option Two is an older ISO
